Title: Mage's Eve: Looking for staff
Post by: PhoenixGames on July 15, 2008, 05:29:47 AM
I am developing an RPG called Mage's Eve. In short, it is the story of a local young man named Jared.

What starts off as a fairly routine extermination job (in which monsters run rampant through the city and our hero must make use of his amateur gun skills to kill off a few nasty monsters.
At any rate, things get very out of hand and Jared finds himself 400 years in the future, in a world where humans are more or less enslaved, under the oppressive boot of the technologically, physically, and magically superior Arcana government. He finds out that about 150 years previously, a man named Damien Lenoir obtained the most powerfully magical artifacts in history and set about completely wiping a few races off the face of the earth. Namely the Avatars, who were really the only people who could have had a hope of stopping him.
Jared (who by now has a few allies) does not care, as he will be long dead before that happens and at any rate only wants to go home and enjoy the beach.
However, he manages to get dragged in anyway, and ends up neck-deep in war, destiny, magic, time-screwaroundery, and of course a bit of a love affair.

I have had a few versions up in the past, but alas; I need to rework them desperately.

What I absolutely need:
A composer. Someone familiar with music and MIDI composition programs, as I want to have a completely original soundtrack.
A spriter. Someone who can pose, create battle animations, et cetera.
A graphic artist. Someone who can create pictures that I can use for cutscene effects, based off of character sprites and faces.

What I would love to have:
Story ideas.
Minigame programmers.
Technique ideas.

What I do not want:
People who are going to berate me over trivial crap, like why I don't have character type X or why character Y isn't a certain way.
Anyone who thinks that Naruto is an accurate portrayal of Ninjutsu. Seriously, don't bother.
People who are illiterate/unintelligent/whiny/noobish/stupid.

What you get in return:
Your name on the game.
A cameo within the game which depending on your contribution may vary between two-second NPC to full party membership.
Cookies.

Setting:

An as of yet un-named planet, similar to our own. The story spans over multiple eras, specifically 2000 AD, 1400 AD, and 2400 AD. Bits of backstory occur in other time periods. (Yes, there is a great deal of time-traveling.)
Races:
Gaians: The most common race on the planet, they are typically not particularly remarkable in any way except for their rather unique diversity and the fact that they seem to spread across the entire globe. In short, they are exactly like humans.
Mystics: Powerfully spiritual creatures, they are often seen as 'perfect' beings for their appearance. Tall, thin, and frequently possessed of very long, pointed ears, they possess a variety of abilities that stem from internal wells of raw magic. They try to stay neutral in most things, but there are Dark Mystics who delve into the less pure side of their abilities. This does not necessarily mean they are evil, they are just regarded as 'impure'. More than one has considered the race as a whole to be stuck-up pricks.
They are very long-lived, though not immortal.
Oni: The rarest race of all, they are creatures who by nature are ambiguous and extremely powerful. They don't show up very often, but when they do it usually means something big is going to happen. They are suspected to be immortal, though due to their rarity this is unproven.
Sirens: A small race who seem to be genderless. All sirens are possessed of foresight and musical talent of some kind, through which they are able to cast fairly powerful magic. They're widely regarded as an annoyance however because a) they're damn busybodies and get involved in anything and everything they deem important, and b) though they cannot lie, it is literally impossible to get a straight answer out of them as they have an annoying tendency to speak in nonsense riddles and the occasional bit of rhymed verse. They are immortal as well.
Arcana: Typically referred to as Demons, though many Arcana would consider this an insult. They're defined pretty much as any being with sentient intelligence that does not fall under the category of one of the other races. Outcast, ostracized, and otherwise looked down upon, they are more diverse than any other 'race'. They range from almost human to... well, not.

Inter-species breeding is not common as in most cases they are isolated an/or hate each other, but it is not at all unheard of; hybrids exist, commonly between Humans and some of the more humanoid Arcana.

Main Characters:

Jared Ranier - 18 - Gaian/Arcana
A young resident of Zaneir, a busy coastal city circa 2000 AD. Brash, moody, and stubborn, he is almost never without 1) A firearm of one sort or another, and 2) a scathingly sarcastic comeback to almost any statement. He's a fair marksman, but though light on his feet he's rubbish in physical combat.
His father was a famed gunmaker, but left before his birth.
Shira Ranier - '45' (what she tells people. She's actually around 700 years old) - Arcana
Jared's mother and "The only reason he hasn't starved to death by now", Shira is a strong-willed woman who will happily beat the ever-loving **** out of people who give her crap. Though she's aging, she has some amazing skill with a whip, and has access to some very odd magic...
Sergei Pyotrvitch Ravenov - 42 - Gaian
From the year 2400AD, Sergei is also from Zaneir, though in 400 years it has transformed from a bustling seaside metropolis into an utterly unrecognizable shadow of what it once was; it is now a slum, host to a score of destitute Gaians forced into near-slavery under a small handful of corrupt Arcana.
Sergei himself is gifted with plasma blades, and consequently swords, and a major player in a resistance group called the Jad'ahl. He has a wife and two children, and seeks to get them out of the situation they're in and into freedom, but due to his position it is impossible to do so.
Erin Rhiannan - 17 - Mystic
From 1400, Erin is a Priestess-in-training of the Belgine Temple, a prominent religious establishment in the Mystic domain. Hardly a demure little damsel-in-distress, she is the type of person who when sufficiently provoked would nuke you with Holy Magic rather than sit back and let her allies do the dirty work. She has limited experience in communicating with the next world, and is capable of summoning spirits to aid her in battle.
Nadine Rhiannan - Age Unknown - Mystic
Erin's mother, Nadine is an extremely powerful High Priestess of the entire Mystic Church, second in power only to Damien.
Damien Lenoir - Age Unknown - 'Mystic' (Truly an unheard of Arcana/Oni hybrid)
The High Priest of the Mystic Church and Commander General of His Majesty's army, Damien is an exceedingly powerful soldier and mage. Fanatically loyal, unfailingly polite, generous to a fault, and generally an all-around good person, he comes in time and time again to aid the party in certain endeavors.
However, according to Sergei, Damien Lenoir is the man responsible for the destruction of the Mystics and enslavement of the Gaians.
Surely, this kind and gentle man cannot be the same man who razed an entire nation to the ground in the space of a single night...
Shira - 89 - Arcana
Shira, 600 years younger. Cruel, sadistic, and an extremely powerful Demon Mage, Shira is the primary command behind the Arcana army. One has to wonder what could have happened for her personality to change so drastically...

Other Characters of Importance:

Xiao Liang - 23 - Gaian
A friend and ally of Sergei's and a talented martial artist. He has a very odd way of phrasing things, owing to the fact that he does not speak Gaian very well, but manages to get his point across.
Rose Larouge - 25 - Gaian
A sky pirate from 2000 AD. She captains the airship Black Rose, and is a constant aid to the party due to her expertise with technology. And, there's not a person alive  more skilled with a dagger than her.
Sgt. James 'Alex' Alexander - 34 - Gaian
A police officer from 2000 AD. Very strong physically, he's a boxer in his spare time and his sucker punch is tough enough to fell all but the most hardened of enemies. He has something of a love/hate relationship with Rose.
Simeht Apharos - 896 - Mystic
Apharos is an elderly (and usually very grumpy) apothecarist in the year 2000 AD. Though originally located in Belgine, circa 1400, the party runs into him again in the year 2000, with a slightly altered outlook on life. Though before he was hardly a nice person, the older Apharos, after a lifetime of failures in serving Erin's family and his own dreams of finding an item he calls the 'Amplifier', he is eternally bitter, seeing everyone and everything as pointless. He follows Erin only as a sense of duty, though he pulls his own weight in battle, through a mixture of potions, serums, chemicals, and a bit of alchemy.
Kuro Akane - 19 - Arcana
A practitioner of ninjutsu* from a small island village in 1400, Kuro is a soft-spoken person as a rule, rarely saying anything that is unnecessary. His primary purpose behind joining the party is due to the destruction of his home by Damien's magic.
*By this I mean actual, stealth-and-secrecy ninjutsu, not Naruto's representation of the art.
Prince Aremis von Damme XIV - 52 - Mystic
Despite the general image of Mystic royalty being useful for nothing other than taxing the ever-loving crap out of the non-royals, Aremis XIV is a talented fighter, experienced in many weapons, particularly in the use of the Halberd or Quarterstaff. Not at all content to sit by and let Damien lay waste to his kingdom, Aremis joins the party later on. He is slightly infatuated with Erin, though the feelings are not reciprocated.
Jack Spade - 21 - Gaian
Vain, greedy, and full of more vices than you could shake a stick at, Jack is an avid gambler who seems to never know when to quit. Or at least you would get that impression upon first meeting him. In truth, he gambles in the hopes of raising enough money to pay for an operation his younger sister desperately needs to recover from a crippling illness. He tends to hide the fact that he is actually a very sensitive person behind his mask of the gambling tough guy, but if one pays attention they might notice.
Jaina - 19 - Arcana
For her time period, perhaps the oddest person you'll ever meet. Utterly fascinated with the idea of Dark Magic, Jaina is a powerful sorceress with a bit of a sadistic streak. She carries a strange, creepy little marionette with her wherever she goes, which she uses as a focus point for her magic. She follows Jared around because it just 'takes serious balls to waltz into an Arcanic prison and tear the place up.' She is an ex-student of the legendary sorceress Morgana, and was cast out because she followed Reline (see below).
Fenrir Medein - 37 - Mystic
The temple Priest of Belgine in 1400. If you happen to be a Mystic, then oh he's as polite and amiable as can be, and if you're a Gaian he'll shower you with hospitality.
But as Jared and company find out, having the slightest drop of Arcanic blood in you automatically makes you unworthy of being within 20 feet of him. Fanatically devoted to his religion, highly prejudiced, and just plain stubborn, Medein is not a person you want to spend a great deal of time with at all. He joins the party very briefly in order to aid in rescuing Erin near the beginning of the game, and leaves the very second she's safe and sound.
'Sphinx' - Age Unknown - Siren
A siren, obviously. 'She' absolutely refuses to give out 'her' true name, or any other information for that matter, and like most Sirens, will not say what gender 'she' is, nor are there any real clues to such. 'She' seems to be content to be considered female, so for the purposes of reference 'she' is. She forced her way into the party, offering no answer but 'The Harp must follow the drums of war, lest it be lost in the grand symphony'. If one can interpret her constant metaphors and nonsense rhymes, she's actually quite helpful (possibly). At any rate, she can cast music-oriented spells that last a great deal of time, though her physical attack is weak.
(http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q391/PhoenixGamesProject/Ramille.png)(http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q391/PhoenixGamesProject/Rhames.png)(http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q391/PhoenixGamesProject/Reline.png)
From left to right:
Ramille, the Black Knight - Age Unknown - Arcana
Rhames, the Grey Prophet - Age Unknown - Arcana
Reline, the White Witch - Age Unknown - Arcana
Shira's three Generals. Not much is known about them, but Ramille is the strongest of the three, a massive, towering figure who wields chains and scythes in battle. He's the least human-looking of the three, with rigid spikes of bone protruding from points all over his body. His skin is like stone to the touch, and as such he needs no armor.
Rhames is blind, and clearly ancient. He is possessed of two abilities, however, that make him a formidable foe in battle: his ability to see the future, and his powerful illusion magic.
Reline is a practitioner of Dark Magic, and like Jaina a former student of Morgana, exiled for her abuse of the art. She has a penchant for elaborate, flowing garments such as gowns, which means she is almost impossible to miss in a crowd. Not that it matters, most would be dead before they got within ten feet of her.
Together, the three of them form the backbone of the Arcanic army.

Mage's Eve... Looking for, STAFF!?! *PUN!* :D

"People who are illiterate/unintelligent/whiny/noobish/stupid." Well, I'm out ;.;

All terrible attempts at comedy aside, I can probably help with the plot.  In my own opinion I'm pretty good with coming up with a plot for games.  If you're interested, contact me on MSN.

I read everything. This sounds wonderful, very original. I really, really hope this goes somewhere.

And since I like it so much, I will take the position of graphic artist.  :Plight:

Sweet, we have an offer.

Do you have a gallery somewhere where I might be able to have a look-see at your work?

Well, I don´t have a gallery, but I do have this (http://www.charas-project.net/forum/index.php?topic=23164.0), for an example of my work... I suppose that is the kind of thing you´re looking for when you say "graphic artist."
