Title: The Adventure of Kyoob-Dead until I get it fixed
Post by: fruckert on June 28, 2009, 11:01:23 AM
Alright...basically, I was bored, and decided to hone my abilities before I made Myrdia.
So, I started this brief little platformer type thing.
The team insofar is Lucas, AFL, and Myself, myself with the programming and art direction, AFL with music, of course, and Lucas with the brain to think up some pretty badass enemies and puzzles. Lucas is also the honorary mapper. Cause I suck at it.

DOWNLOAD LINK BELOW SCREENSHOT

=Game Information=
The only notable thing at the moment about Kyoob is the graphics. Black, white, with the occasional neon color.
There is also a kind of dumbed down combat thing (you hold buttons, and things die), as well as some basic puzzles.
Things I'm planning on adding:
*Boss battles.
*Progressive growth, including your magic getting upgraded.
*Way more enemies.
*Minimap
*Enough rooms for a minimap to be needed
*Some sort of story, most likely involving some of Lucas's creations in weird as neon-ness...such as the Square Dood.
Kraze:
A kraze is a resident of Square Haven who has been corrupted by the Circle Lords. They run around, and ram into you.

Tower Enemy Lucas hasn't drawn yet due to it not being in game:
Called a Krower, it's basically a Kraze that is much larger, and requires three hits.

Splyer:
A resident of Square Haven with the ability to fly. They throw projectiles at you, and move in constant figure eight patterns.

Shif:
An underwater Kraze, basically.

Jacker:
The toughest enemy in the game so far, it jumps high into the air, and then stomps on you. It requires two hits, and moves fairly fast.
=Story=
*No actual story yet. Thinking about having the Square Haven being invaded by circles, and the circles corrupting the squares.

*Characters:
-Kyoob, the main character. A joyous resident of Square Haven.
-Square Dood, God and Lord of Square Haven.

I have quite a bit (I just uploaded the directory) so I'm just going to link the album.

Do you have a story behind it, even a simple one? Besides that there is one

Is it ABS?

I tested it out and it seems awesome, before i tested it though w/ ur description i was expecting a regular rpg game.

Would probably be difficult to include a story in it so good luck and i cannot wait until it is finshed

Alright, updated first post.
In the demo, there is a new room, with the Square Dood. He doesn't do anything yet, but he will talk.

EDIT: Square Dood graphic, of course, by Lucas, edited slightly by me.

Updated with a new room.
It has a small glitch, if you hold up with the launchers, you can die.

Nice/cute/random game done. This is pretty good looking thought. I hate using Game Maker.

Cool. When you fall on the spike, though, they wont always launch you. They do when you walk into them, but not when you jump on them.
I noticed that, I'm going to try to debug it later.
Probably after I do some stuff today, however.

Uploaded new version, with some minor cosmetic changes, exploding fireball, and the Splyer enemy.
Splyer is kinda glitchy, I'm pretty sure you'll see what I mean.

I'm having an issue with Box, so I had to take the link out.
I'll put it back up later today, after I thin down my box and get it more organized.

Updated first post.
I have two new enemies, one called a Shif, which is basically an underwater Kraze, and a insofar unnamed enemy that stomps on you.
The unnamed enemy takes two hits, by the way. He's also fairly glitchy, so prepare to be launched across the room.

what did you make this with?
Title: Re: The Adventure of Kyoob
Post by: fruckert on July 03, 2009, 02:44:24 AM
Game Maker.
The only things I didn't program myself is the platforming engine, Sparkengine, and the health display. Everything else I coded though.
Title: Re: The Adventure of Kyoob
Post by: fruckert on July 03, 2009, 09:30:34 PM
The jumping enemy will prolly be easier and more fun to kill when you add the jumping attack.
Probably...still working on getting the sprites down.

Where's the tower dude, by the way? (:
Working on his programing, and his sprites. He needs six sprites, apparently, in order for him to look natural.

I see that you removed the shortcut as well.
It's still in there, it's just harder to figure out.

Added the Shif and the Jumping things gifs. The jumping thing is called a Popper in the album, but that's not the official name.
If you come up with a name, please post it here.

Added some concept art by Lucas, as well as named the jumping thing, which is from hereafter known as a Jacker.

The music for this game is very fun to make.  Although, quite difficult to just get the right feel.  I'll work morre on it today after summer school. =P

I accidentally lost the Jacker pic :(
Title: Re: The Adventure of Kyoob
Post by: fruckert on July 07, 2009, 07:39:43 AM
New version uploaded and guess what:
There's sound.
I will admit, the music is only supposed to stay in the title, but AFL hasn't finished any of the other songs yet, and I figured just having a few sound effects in there will be kind of...quiet, so I just made the music stick.

Anyways, I also have some new screenshots in the album, check them out if you want, and I have a new room/feature.
The newest feature is kind of hard to get used to, but it is definitely worth it for when I get production on the final game running.

EDIT: Also, you can't exit the game with just escape anymore, you have to hit escape, go to the title screen, and then run into the side exits. It's also full screen now.
If you want, hit f9 for a screenie.

Lucas is officially the mapper for the game now.
And, I guess production of the actual game is starting to start now.
I'll still release demos with the occasional new environmental block.

How do you close the game?  I made it through the demo, but I can't close the game normally. -.-"

I'm still working on something.  I've been busy with stuff. =P

Quick update on how the game is doing:

I just finished drawing out the first level in the Fire zone, which is called Fire Haven.
I also finished drafting three more enemies, two of which bounce.
The other is a mystery ;)

I'll update the main thread as soon as Lucas gets the art done for the new enemies.

Yes, I am working on it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3trZ-RF8oc).
Sorry for the crappy quality, I just made it less than half an hour ago.
Next one will be better looking, I promise.
Title: Re: The Adventure of Kyoob
Post by: Fisherson on July 17, 2009, 09:59:38 PM
Does it flash much? I downloaded the game, but I'm not opening the file until I know if it flashes.
Title: Re: The Adventure of Kyoob
Post by: Fisherson on July 18, 2009, 03:49:19 AM
No flashes.

Sweet. When I get in from work, I'm playing it. I hate how most retro games, like nes ones, are good but they flash so much. Did you know I can play DQ3 on the GBC because there are no flashes? If I play it on the nes though, well you get the idea.
Title: Re: The Adventure of Kyoob
Post by: fruckert on July 18, 2009, 06:08:39 AM
Yeah, the only thing that's even close to flashing isn't even in the game yet, due to lazy programming.
Even then I'm pretty sure it wouldn't bother you, because it's so slow.
Title: Re: The Adventure of Kyoob

I played this through. Pretty fun, and I didn't realize I could double jump until I had completed everything. :P

Anyway, I got bored, and then drew these:

I'm going to assume you don't mind if I attempt to implement them in the game?
Because those are really good.
I really like the Taink. I think, assuming you let me, that he'll make an awesome Earth Stage miniboss.
Title: Re: The Adventure of Kyoob

By all means, go ahead and use 'em.
Title: Re: The Adventure of Kyoob

Just so you know, I finished the Circle Guard enemy, now known as a Sirke.
The ground grunts are going to be known as Sirks.
The sentries acted kind of weird when I attempted to make them have a targeting phase, so now they just open for a second, and fire a laser at you, then sleep for three. It actually ended up looking better, and is a lot less glitchy.
I'm working on the Gondalah right now, and I took some liberties with the sprite design.
Later tomorrow, I'm going to try to make a video of the Sirke working.

Cool.

By the way, do you think you can send me midis of some of the music in the game? I want to see how they might sound as TFM's (Genesis/Megadrive-style Synth). Might go well with the style of game, perhaps?
Title: Re: The Adventure of Kyoob
Post by: fruckert on July 19, 2009, 05:23:47 AM
Hmm...they might, but I'm kind of worried as how the game would take that.
It heavily dislikes big files for music, which is why it recommends midis.
And for a project as large as this, it'll mainly want to use midis.

I'll go ahead and send you the two that AFL has finished so far, though.

I would hope they would sound nice and classic.  But, alas, not everything turns out as planned.  Still trying to come up with that regular adventure theme.

Post by: drenrin2120 on July 20, 2009, 03:28:05 AM
Well, take your time with it. Doesn't have to be perfectly bug-free, 'cuz it is a demo, but you know.
Title: Re: The Adventure of Kyoob
Post by: fruckert on July 20, 2009, 03:36:01 AM
Yeah, I want to fix the platforms (if you try jumping while it's going down, you'll jerk around and sometimes even get stuck in the wall), as well as fix some glitchy enemies (the Jacker mainly, although he hasn't made an appearance as of yet in Fire Haven).
So mostly they're AI and collision glitches, because most of my variable systems (I.E., the Questing system) work beautifully.

I'll probably end up finishing the next demo in about a week or so, so I can fix some enemies, remap a couple of rooms so the puzzles make a bit more sense, as well as succesfully map a boss room (me and lucas divided up mapping duties, because I wanted like 14 rooms in one dungeon)
Title: Re: The Adventure of Kyoob
Post by: drenrin2120 on July 20, 2009, 03:41:30 AM
That all sounds awesome. I did notice a few collision discrepencies myself. Nothing major though, I'd get stuck occassionally in a corner, but I could always jump out. I definitely will be downloading the next update.

Here's the main theme in GEN style. (http://www.box.net/shared/4tc1b7yv8r)

I'm guessing there's going to be air and water levels as well?
Title: Re: The Adventure of Kyoob
Post by: fruckert on July 21, 2009, 01:18:40 AM
Correct. There's also going to be an earth and "evil" one. The "evil" one's going to be a circle corrupted Life zone, though.
I'm planning on it being very different looking then the rest of the places.

I'm going to make a hint later on that says it can go through some hints and not others.

Anyways, I'm almost done mapping the miniboss room on paper, and I fixed some glitches.
I'm still trying to find the code for collisions in the Sparkengine code, though, so that nasty platform collision glitch is gonna have to stay there for a while.

Awesome... although I noticed a small glitch the second time the melody comes in.  The last measure of it is off. (Measure 8 if you can see that)  It should be the same both times.  Only thing I noticed.  Again, sounds awesome though.

Video update (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=As3GTHgisn8).
I learned how to do this cool new thing with variables and instance creation, so I tried tweaking the trail script, and this was the result.
Tell me what you think about the new color change when you get hit by an enemy.

I can't tell if the music is looping properly. Hm.  If you need me to, I can add a four measure interlude if that'll help it loop better.  I couldn't really tell from the video though.  (And it'd have to wait until Thursday.  I've got performences until Sunday, and then I go to camp that evening until Weds.)
Title: Re: The Adventure of Kyoob

And for some reason, it inspired me to try to start a game...

Hey sweet, I'm an inspiration :D

Anyways, I'm having quite a bit of trouble mapping the boss room (I'm thinking on making the miniboss right now a common enemy, and not a miniboss and just designing a new boss), so the next demo is going to be even more delayed.

I'm having a problem - once I get to the Legend Of Zelda style flying circles guy (lol), I don't know how to continue. I see a heart to add health, but to go through the lava kills me every time. Where do I go?

Edit - Never mind. Figured it out. Clever, however I thought that i couldn't kill the guy because in LOZ you can't kill those monsters lol

Okay. Excellent work so far, although some of the jumping puzzles were frustrating while the last version was a tad more entertaining. Altogether, very good game. I've never really seen anything as good as this from game maker, haha. 8.5/10.
Thanks for the quick reply, too lol

Talk to him, and then jump on top of him and hit the key.

I tried to, but failed... then remembered you could jump twice.

Also, unless I'm failing once again...
You can't attack while in the air.
You can jump indefinitely in the water only when moving (left or right)
If you stand still and hold the jump button, your first jump will be fine, but the next ones will use his two jumps.

But it's a good game, I like it. Plus, it's got it's own unique style.

I sure wish I would understand how Game Maker works... too bad I don't have the patience to learn it.

Is that why you went off msn and forgot to come back? lol

EDIT: Does want an update. Hey Fruckert, care to share any hints about what's to come next in Kyoob?

Um...stuff...
I'm having major mappers block at the moment, and haven't been able to really make much new stuff in it yet.
Hell, I haven't yet fixed the room that comes after the boss battle.

Anyone care to give a hand?

I might be able to think up some level designs. For the room after the boss battle, maybe make an almost stairway up to a platform where a guy congratulates you on your progress, and then reveals a teleporter back to the room where you choose which of the three trials you will embark on. With the fire one disabled, of course. For the ice level, how difficult would it be to program sections that are "slippery", so that if you move across them, you lose control of movement or something? It would prove for some interesting jumping puzzles.

I already have slippery blocks, but that was just the midboss.
There's still about 5 more rooms until the big-boss, who is the Fire Lord.

I don't If my insits can Help. I can't really DRAW a map, but I can give Ideas that'll make things different.

I don't know if you already have these Platforming elements in but

1: Falling blocks (They collapse once you touch em) (Ice would shatter, Fire would melt)
2: Fire that lumps out of the lava, with your simple geometry style that I love, just make the fire small or medium circles.
3: SeaSaw blocks ( They work like a scale, one side drops, the other lifts)
4: Item Boxes [Holding Health, speed boosts, ectet.] ( I mean, C'mon. Just about EVERY Generic Platformer has em.)
5: Jump pads (Y'know, things that launch you a great height into the air)
I hope, yet slightly doubt, that this was helpful.

The SeeSaw blocks might be a bit challenging to program, but I'll see to it that I can try something.
Seeing as the game has very basic physics, however, it might be a tad hard.
Lucas keeps telling me to make the fire jumper thingies, but I keep forgetting...
Falling blocks, not that hard, but they may introduce some glitches.
Everything else I have in one form or another.

Anyways, yeah, I'm still kind of stumped on mapping, if your interested, PM me/MSN me and we'll talk.

Yeah. The Teenage Pregnancy dude (I lost myself on dialogue for a second) is supposed to be the god of the realm.
You talk to him, and then hit the key that appears on his head (I think)

Press space =P
EDIT: Wait...what're you having troubles with?
The end boss battle (which might be scrapped once I get following AI down), or just getting into Fire Haven?

Okay I nailed it. Didn't know I could double jump :P spent like 10 minutes trying to wall jump off his face.

I don't know why but something between the last demo and this one has made my affection for Kyoob increase tenfold. Perhaps the addition of game functions like save points and health pickups, or maybe the improved mapping of the fire haven. It just seems more substantial. I hope you get back on course with it, it's looking real nice.

Walking home last night, saw a sign for a company named "Kyoob Space", took photo on mobile phone, didnt think through, had no way of transferring files.

x3
I honestly think I've heard of it before.
*thinks of stealing name for official Universe name*

EDIT: Hey, I've found a little inspiration, so I'm mapping the rooms again.
First though, I need to remake all the sprites so that they are 2x their base, because this little graphical glitch is annoying the piss out of me.
That's been taking about an hour so far, because there's a LOT of sprites in this game.

Also, I'm starting to expand a bit on the Kyoob mythos, because that's how I roll, and I made a couple more characters, such as the BluMage that is now my avatar.
So more characters may start to sprout up in this.

Just a question, but is there suppost to be a room after the first boss? If so, I can't get to it.

Wow.  Sorry I haven't been working on that music at all.  I'll try to get something done, but I can't promise anything for right now, though.

So you did the music, for some reason hearing Fire Havens music make me want to play Kings Field again.
BTw I love it.
