So I was looking through my early posts and my first two games. And I was a complete and utter noob who had no idea what he was doing. I couldn't spell, I couldn't sprite, I couldn't write stories, I couldn't code, I was making threads without having anything to show, and I was asking people for help and giving up on ideas five minutes later.
So, what happened? How were the replies? People telling me to suck a dick, someone telling me to get a life, people saying that my ideas would never work and that I should give up?
No.
Everyone wanted to help. Everyone was offering to lend a hand. I had people suggesting better stories, there were people who made me facesets, those who helped me find system graphics and chipsets. And not just me, there were all those noobs back then, some of them stayed, some didn't, but we all sucked, and we all had help when we asked for it.
And you know? I was a stupid 12 year old with too much free time and too many stupid ideas, and it's only natural that I'd change with time. But there were people, now in their 20s, who were around my age, and now I look at those people, and the people who are my age now, myself included, and that willingness to help, that hope in the projects of the beginners, all that... It's nowhere to be found. When did this happen to us, when did we stop caring about each other's ideas and dreams?
):
-
Eh, go suck a dick.
... someone had to do it.
-
Its because I was banned.
-
Why did that happen again?
I honestly can't remember.
-
Nor do I. Something about me poking fun at people who had power on this forum :P

We're not as bad as you think.

Prpl_Mage doesn't count!

http://www.charas-project.net/forum/index.php?topic=28105.0
What about that one then?
-
Guess that getting older and dealing with life's stress made us less likely to be helpful now that we have to deal with more problems. Or something.
-
Did you ever consider that maybe Charas has become a kind of...clicke? Which has resulted in a bit of a Vet/Elite state of mind? I mean, it's easier to be a jerkface then a decent human being, nowadays
-
If I hadn't completely forgotten everything about RPGM, I might actually help. Well, that explains that.
-
Yeah, true that. Last time I touched RPG Maker I was still a minor.
-
Eh...................
Had this conversation with some old friends I reunited with. We all had been in bands in highschool. Some of us had been in multiple bands. We talked about how we'd spend every day in a basement jamming. Even though we sucked, we kept playing. And we'd play shows in basements, at parties and sometimes we'd get lucky and play some pretty sweet venues. We eventually got better and made music we're all pretty happy about even now. We would even pool our money to get a few hours in a recording studio.
We also all agreed that same drive just isn't there anymore. Work, college, general life things. They get in the way. How do you find time (or a practice space) to jam every day when you work 40 hours a week and are trying to get your degree? Where's the money to buy new strings, new drum heads, fix amps, fix guitars, sell tickets, record, when you've got bills and loans to pay off?
I don't know man. I'm not saying it's impossible. I'm just saying, life is ****ing us all up pretty hard and it's not as easy to find that inspiration. Not only is the 'newness' of it gone, but we've all got more responsibilities. And the same applies to game making.
Oh, and nobody likes rm2k3, even though vx graphics suck ***.
-
Prpl_Mage doesn't count!
Aw.
Anyway, I believe that one of the factors bringing you to this conclusion is that we have less noobs these days. And since the amount of noobs are lower( a lot lower) than it was back when you were 12 each bad reply affects a greater percentage of our average nice/jerk scale.
There are people who have good requests and those usually gets answered, then we have those that request a specific thing usually found at the spriters resource, and the people who just needed a google search - and lastly the people who make such weird request that the troll alarm is going high-wired.
But just because less kiddos are working with the outdated maker there are also less people who can be subjects to the help we offer. Sure the whole spriting department is a bit lacking these days but that's mainly because it takes more time than explaining how to make some sort of feature work.
Oh and also, we've become a lot more cynical over the years. Some years ago we saw every idea as a potential game. Now there is nothing about a thread that makes us think that the game will actually be completed. Sad but true. I blame Lucas for that though, kid started a lot of games and he can suck a dick.
-
Nice point at the end there.
-
I want to say Lucas go suck a dick to be cool....
But that's mean. :<
-
Lucas, go suck a cool dick.
-
Always gotta outdo me, eh? >:(
-
I think I recall him saying he woke up with bite marks on his penis after getting drunk, so... yeah. Who knows what happened that night. Maybe he already is cool.
-
Lucas, go suck a cool dick.
I think I recall him saying he woke up with bite marks on his penis after getting drunk, so... yeah. Who knows what happened that night. Maybe he already is cool.
But that's the wrong way around, it should go the other way.
-
..this is crazy..this whole topic is crazy..
-
Go suck Lucas' cool dick.
-
But that's the wrong way around, it should go the other way.
What I meant by "Who knows what happened that night" is that... perhaps it also went the other way. Except Lucas didn't use his teeth. Who knows? Well, besides him, of course. But screw his opinions on that matter.
-
His opinions can suck a dick.
-
I just realized that this thread must look like a disaster to outsiders. Some guy says we need to get nicer and we're just bashing him down with ten feet poles.
-
Don't take your ten foot pole near Lucas. He'd take it as a challenge.
-

This exactly... and how pessimistic we are about every project it seems.
-
Oh look, it's one of those demotivational threads.
It's true though. That's why I took all my projects elsewhere.
...Oh wait, this is not what this thread is about anymore?
...Lucas twinkie?
Lucas was 12 years old and what is this.
-
Its more like a chat room now.
Still my favorite place though since gamingw kinda changed.
-
I hate you guys.
We love you, too.
-
I think one of these threads happen at least once a year. Its slowly getting better. The number of projects and helpful advice from everyone is increasing lately. Just give charas some time. Plus, it looks like a lot of the new people we are getting are very new to the program, so we just have to be patient with them.
Its alright Lucas. Just remember, that most of us have some kind of project on the back burner. Maybe eventually something will inspire us to finally work on it?
-
It's because I left.
No, but seriously. We're all too busy living our lives to help people on the internet. I don't know about you, but I think that's a good thing.
-

Well they'll at least have an idea of what Charas has become, now.
Just kidding...
...I think
Don't take your ten foot pole near Lucas. He'd take it as a challenge.
I lol'd.
I hate you guys.
I think I'm kinda to blame. I regret nothing, though!

GW changed 5 years ago. After they banned me.
-
To be fair, you were banned here, too.
-
Chuckle chuckle chuckle
-
The way this thread has been going answers your question lucas. Nobody cares anymore. It's all about lame sarcastic jokes and non-constructive remarks it seems.
-
Well, there is a new-ish rpg maker in the works, by a guy I think named 'Wolfcoder' that is connecting the best of the bests from each rpg maker on the computer. From 2000 to VX, and it works as if it's rpg maker 2003, but has a script editor if I recall correctly. When it is all the way complete, it could be a very nice thing for most people who are BORED with the others, to use.
-
Gotta link?
I'm interested.
-
To be fair, it's been like this for YEARS. Every attempt to rekindle interest in game making failed. I don't know why you're all acting so outraged now.

I mad a hilarious comment about Lucas' gay experience but it looks like my net didn't send it through yesterday or whenever, and as a result never made it here. Now it is lost to the annals of time.
I just thought you should know.
-
No sure, games in the making are all great and stuff. Most projects that are actually finished as really well done. It's just that we don't get our hopes up too much 'cuz we have experience with people dropping of the chart after stating something like "I'm working hard on this and it's almost ready for a demo/ release!". Stuff happens and we don't want to be disappointed.
Also, we're getting a bit oldie these days. I remember my youth when my greatest concern were wether I wanted to play on my GC or the PS2. These days I got a lot of responsibility and life and all that crap that involves making money and looking for a place. Us senior members don't have the luxery of time anymore and it's kinda sad. Interest is still there though, buried someplace inside opressed by the system and all that mumbojumbo.
-
So suddenly this thread becomes about how we are grumpy old men?
I already do this outside the internet, let's not go there.
You obviously still post here, so your responsibilities allow for at least that much.
To be fair, you were banned here, too.
GW did it first. This place was already weirder then.
-
Wait...
...
I've been here almost 9 years.
ಠ_ಠ
Remind me whytf i still go here? I haven't even been in one physical place more than 9 years in my life.
God I'm old.

I'm still messing around with BlizzABS. I dunno, maybe I'll make a useless thread about the project, so far the combat is coming along nicely. I just can't storyline for ****. I've always been nice and helping to others regardless, and man this community has changed. I have been in and out often. A lot has happened in between that time. I hope all of you die still. Just remember that c:
-
If it is of any comfort, we all, will in fact, die.

If it is of any comfort, we all, will in fact, die.
I know. <3
My problem is VX was terrible on my eyes, heart, and soul. I hate the character size, and just everything about it. that 20xx looks really cool, since it'll have the much easier to use graphic engine and such for 2k3, and still have scripting. Meh, my college life isn't an excuse for why I'm not so productive. I'm not productive because I suck, at anything but combat systems. It's the one thing I love making, and working with. My mapping has gotten better, much better, still a little rough, but I can't storyline at all. I hate it. I had some troll by the name of ZE attack my thread when I posted it, so it was kinda disheartening. My problem with that project was I knew the final product wouldn't stick together, so I moved on to XP, and have been working out much smoother with BlizzABS. Who knows, maybe during the summer I'll go on a productivity spree like I normally do.
I don't even have internet where I live, so my actual chances to get online are not often. Sucks.
-
VX allowed you to use any character size, as long as it was proportionate.
-
VX allowed you to use any character size, as long as it was proportionate.
I still didn't like it. Most the new resources coming out are usually based off the new RM's RTP, so most of the stuff I see is 1square high characters. Still, blizzABS is for XP, and I haven't seen an ABS with as ease to use as BlizzABS yet.
-
I think I speak for most of us when I say that there's still a desire to make a game, but there's always something in the way. Usually real life, but sometimes it's other stuff. Personally, I keep finding that a lack of motivation comes in and kicks my big plans sandcastle to the ground and steals my girlfriend while guffawing at me and calling me a nerd.
-
Charas has always had a significant amount of people that just want to hang out, but I think it's becoming more and more prominent now, and I think a major part of that is that we've all grown up. We all used to be kids or teenagers, but now we're all grown up or close to it, and we have more things to worry about, so RPG Maker gets neglected. But we're all still friends with one another, so we stick around to chat with one another, even if we don't have spare time to work on games or anything else. I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing, though - I don't have many friends IRL, but I have you guys to come to when I need to satiate my craving for social interaction. Things change with time, and sometimes, you just gotta let it go.
-

Thank you, I've been needing a good pep talk.

I have plenty of time to work, I'm just slow as hell. e_e

We could become a forum about gaming overall.
I mean, it would attract people who aren't into game-making but enjoy discussing games, and we already discuss games all the time, and we could keep the game-making part of the forum.
This dark-blue color also puts away people, or so I hear. We could perhaps use an overhaul.
I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing, though - I don't have many friends IRL, but I have you guys to come to when I need to satiate my craving for social interaction.
That's so very, very sad.
-
You'll have to find people willing to create and support any given overhaul. I'm not gunna do it.
-
Don't you go changing our pretty pretty dark blue colours. It's pleasing and relaxing. Makes me think of old school games that didn't use any background pics.
Anyway, we all probably have plans, ideas, systems ect that we want to work with. Maybe make that game at last. But life usually gets in the way, and once that part of life is over - it's been so long since we last worked with it that the motivation is lacking. So I suggest that we all at least try to do something rpg-makish once a year and publish it at the charas birthday (or christmas) for everyone to play. No rules or guidelines needed for that right?
-
Okay so there's this amazing feature of SMF/every modern forum software ever. It's called OPTIONS! Such as OPTIONS to change the theme of the site! So we could change the default them to something not-eyeraping and have the good old blue as an option.
-
Friends in charas? I got more qualifying traits of friends in the rotting carrot and potato in my fridge.
I found out I come here to remind myself of how great I am.
Also, the people here are too afraid to change the color spectrum of this site. Something about nostalgia and how it gives them an erection.
-
If we were being truly retro then charas should be white ^_^
Yeah, options sound nice I guess. I love the blue though, myself.
-
I would love different color schematics options :O
-
Fine, add options, But I want my dark blue and I bet most regulars want it as well.
-
I actually have always thought to be a very dull color for a forum. Regardless of it being my outmost favorite color.
-
Lime green e'rything.
-
Remember when we had it hot pink? That was awesome.
-
Good times.
-
I had a seizure for like a week. Oh wait i wasn't here during that time...
Then where the hell was i....
-
Ah, yes, the pink colour...
Kinda miss it.
-
Sweet eye-raping Christ! I forgot how bad it was!
-
How is that not supposed to turn people away?
Looks like some cheesy porn fanfic dedicated forum. The kind of colors i see on Adult shops.
-
Fruity.
-
Oh yeah...back when Raffles was an admin. Good times. Good good times.
-
Yeah, Mid and I put those colors up and I got deadmined for it.
I regret nothing.
-
Fruity.
-
Yeah... Orange names were the greatest.
That was the dream for me as an aspiring little moose pup being scolded by Ghostclown and carmen and encouraged by Robotam. I knew I'd one day rise up the ranks...
...well I might not have physically been scolded but I sure remember it that way.
-
UHHH I don't recall that ugly *** green in there. Honestly. You deserved it if that was real. I can't trust my mind right now...<< (holds on tight to her pink name)
-
Was an April Fools thing.
Oh.
Well it's coming up again. You all weirdos should do something again.
-
There are no plans for any holiday or other event-related anythings for the indefinite future.
-
Well, start planning!
