Title: Apex (Zuhane's trippy 2D shooter RPG)
Post by: zuhane on December 07, 2012, 07:20:29 PM
Hello persons!!!! I feel like I haven't posted on this forum for absolutely ages. I've been busy, and I've not seen
a load of activity on the forums and stuff, so I've just kind of buried my head away. Anyway, something that halted
my game design for ages was the fact I was using rm2k3. I felt that I didn't want to invest a heavy amount of time
in a project which had so many boundaries and could never be expanded in any way. So I switched University courses,
ditched Biology and started learning game development with computer science. Now I'm feeling pretty damn good with XNA!
I've got animation sorted, learned particles, lots of physics, and learned that I can somehow sprite stuff half-decently along
the way.

This game project is in the early stages, but is functional and expanding lots every day. I'd like to see how this project goes,
and maybe even consider trying to put something on Steam Greenlight in a few years. Anyway, I present to you my latest project.

Unfortunately, I can't find any good screen capture software anywhere, so you'll just have to take my work when I say these screenshots run at 60fps and

allow movement, jumping, running with velocity, aiming and shooting. All art is subject to change, as this is an early test run.

We'll be mixing vector art (BG and foreground) with pixel art (play area)

A fungus camel. This will be a mount eventually!

An patrol robot moves from right to left with 4 health. The main character is carrying the flush cannon.

A logo I worked on for the development team name.

I made a class which all living things inherit from which takes care of animation. Spritesheets of any size are accepted :D

Same sort of thing here!

Tried making a particle emitter. Succeeded! This looks worlds better when it's animated and not all still.

A small test map we use to create new guns, character animations and movements, enemies and collisions. Wish you could see him shooting in real-time,
but every screen recording program ever created in the history of the world is ****.

Just a few of the guns we'll be putting in our game. They're all levellable, and due to using something with less
constraints, and some of our special methods, all of the behaviour for guns can be inherited, making new gun creation
easy as heck! The Scythe is a mandatory weapon.

Just trying out my drawing pad with different vector art styles approaches.

That's about it! Tell me what you think. Any ideas, support, feedback, criticism, etc will be greatly welcomed!

Looks great. Makes me wish I had started my projects on something other than rm :P

Thanks guys. I'm currently in the tedious process of reading a 488 page manual which will probably give me enough maths and physics
to program some cool weapon ideas. Will hopefully post some weapon demos soon.

How'd you get vectors working in XNA?
I've tried that for Kyoob and failed miserably.

Working in what way? I use them for most of my coordinate tracking.

Vector graphics.
Like, the backgrounds.
Or are those just pre-rendered images?

It looks like ****.

The ****!

Get one of those recording programs working and show us some gameplay dammit

Also, I was totally expecting some green triangle action.
Why isn't there any green triangles?

Agreed. You can't call is Apex without Apex.

If this is as good as it looks, though, I might have to give up making platformers >_>

fruck: I do all of the pixel art in Paint and all of the menu design, foreground and background images in Flash. I draw all the vector art to
scale to a 42" monitor in 1080p, which then scales down, so it looks crisp on any monitor or resolution. They're then rendered into PNGs with transparency, from
flash.

prpl: WHERE!? Where do I get a decent recording program!? I downloaded a few, and most outputted at about 5fps with low quality.

There will be plenty of green triangles in time to come! Once I have the basic system fully working, I'll post some updates about how the actual
gameplay, storyline, etc will pan out.
