Title: Is there a...problem with RTP?
Post by: just1question on October 25, 2004, 12:06:44 AM
I was wondering:
I started making my game about two months ago, and I started kind of haphazardly and excitedly, using all RTP stuff.  And since then I've discovered several resource sites, so I started to use better stuff.  However, in reference to characters, faces, and battle charsets, is there really any problem with maybe using a few RTP characters?  Because I've noticed in some reviews, especially on phylomortis.com, that if you use RTP, you're the biggest newb ever.  Is there really any problem with it, other than the fact that it's not really original material?
Also because I've already planned to make 4 of my main playable characters RTP, but I can change that.  I just don't want to be asking everyone to help me make facesets and battle charsets :(

Everything is okay when used in moderation. If you use a bit of RTP, no one's really going to care. And if they do, that's too bad for them.

RTP's dont make your game look that bad. For example, great made games use RTP's such as a blurred line. Now thats a good game, with some rtps.

Hell, a blurred line is the ugliest game Ive ever played, and yet it was the most enjoyable Ive ever played.
It's all just in appearance really. A couple of RTP characters arent gonna make you the biggest newbie ever.

Yeah I'm usually against RTP. The reason is because I've seen them used in tons of games for the past 4 years. And most of the games that use the rtp resources are made by people who have never made a game before. And well, no offence, but usually peoples first games aren't the best. I also believe that using RTP graphics for main characters, or for most of the maps takes away part of the games originallity.

My suggestion is that you don't use any rtp gfx for any of the key characters, or for most of the maps. Using rtp gfx for normal npcs, monsters, backdrops, and for some maps isn't that bad though.

Serously though, there are thousands upon thousands of resources scattered all over the internet, finding some other ones besides the rtp ones isn't that hard...

I have nothing against RTP, it's just a cosmetic issue. The plot and the gameplay is all that matters.

Always, I mean ALWAYS, when you show your game to a big community with RTP, they start to shout you "Use Mack & Blue RTP is so lame". Bullshit. Mack & Blue is even more overused than RTP.

But the hardest thing is finding sets that MATCH each other...

RTP isn't that bad. I plan to use 1 bgm, some battle anims and the sounds.
You would have a truly shoddy looking game if EVERYTHING was RTP based in my opinion...

People who hate rtp are dumb because getting un-rtp sounds for everything is SO hard! so they're probobly being a hypocrite

Although I'm planning on getting a few more sound effects for my game than RTP, that's only simply because I need them.  The sound effects might, in the end, be the ONLY thing I'm using all RTP of.  Of course, if you're talking about music, you NEED more music than just RTP, because there's SO much better stuff out there.  Actually, I think the only 2 RTP musics I'm using right now are a pub music and an item shop music, and I might end up changing those.

I find that the only overused-so-much-that-it-makes-your-game-look-like-a-game-made-by-a-newbie are the charsets and the Battlecharsets. The rest is okay IMO. Except that defualt Title Music *Shudders*

BTW: About that Wicked Pong Game that's 3D Etc.... THERE IS ONE
IT's so fun. With power ups and everything
