Need sound effects - Help please :D

This isn't really a tutorial what I need... but I didn't know where else to post.

My friend and I are working on a game together which is going to be 100% custom. I've already made some music, renders and lots of ideas along with the plot.

He's done lots of spriting for me.

For this game to be 100% custom... I need the sound effects to be generated from somewhere by me and him. I heard ages ago about a retro sound effect maker
specifically for RPG Maker, but can't find it on Google. If anyone knows of any good, free software for creating sound effects (preferrably retro) for battles, transitions
etc, then I'd be really grateful

P.S. By retro, I don't mean NES noises, a bit more sophisticated than that! Cheers!

The Cavestory Deluxe download contains a custom sound synthesizer. Cant remember what its called.
