Invalid color depth!
Before anyone says anything or kicks this topic, yes I have read the faqs, yes I have searched the forum, yes I have read like 20 posts about this, still, logic has no bearing on this problem.
I recently came into a much needed sprite sheet and went to import it but it threw the invalid color depth error so I doublechecked the palette (256), even went so far as to copy and paste on a new 144 x 384 .png image and save with irfanview in 256 color. I STILL get the invalid color depth error. I will personally give 10 internets to anyone that can solve this problem for me.

If you have photoshop try going to image mode, and setting it to indexed color.

Don't make the background transparent until AFTER importing it?

Problem solved, sorta.
I exported a confirmed resource, opened it and saved it as 256 (which it already was) then went to import it and it failed. After hours of investigation I discovered that, although irfanview was saving them as .png (and their extension confirmed this), the properties of the image noted it as a jpeg. I have no idea why it was doing that but I've stopped using irfanview. Got a hold of photoshop like I should have in the first place. All's well that ends well, I suppose. /sigh
