So about a week ago, the long in-development fan remake of Metroid II was released. About 12 hours later, they were DMCA'd by Nintendo. Needless to say, the creators are no longer hosting the game. Now, that doesn't mean it's not still obtainable, and this particular fan of the project was sure to get a hold of it somewhere in the neighborhood of the first four hours of release. I beat it just the other day (sadly, only 93% item collection), and I can't help but sing its praises.
You guys, it's really good. It almost feels like it could have been an official release instead of just a fan project. Was anyone else fortunate enough to get a hold of it?

Never heard of it actually. Did they contact Nintendo and Nintendo declined the remake or did they just make the remake?

It was developed independently by fans. They've been working on it for years (I want to say around a decade), and they just got it out the door. They're still working on it despite the DMCA, and just released version 1.1 today. Since they haven't been given an official cease and desist order, they're releasing what they can until Nintendo threatens legal action.
So basically they're putting up versions of it until they get pulled, and are working on it until legal actions are taken. Nintendo has an obligation to protect its IPs, but the fact that they didn't drop the hammer years ago suggests that they want to support the project, but can't risk losing their claims to the Metroid brand.
Here's a link to their site, which has links to the latest version.

I've been super excited about this for a long time. These are the kind of things that wont be eradicated from the internet luckily. It'll live on in filesharing limbo, so the developer can rest easy knowing that people will still get to play it. If anything attention like this is going to cause more people to download it while they can, before it comes a trip to a sketchy torrent site.
I played this about 4-5 years ago, and loved it. I didn't realize it was a beta at the time though, and it ended very abruptly. I'm no longer bitter about my ignorance, I'll give it another shot. I'm a huge fan of Metroid, and although the way 2 was designed makes it my least favorite (hunting metroids etc.), it's still a gem, and what I played earlier of this remake was great.
