Uhm, the hair part is true. It gives you a small advantage. But I'm still pretty sure that if enough zombies get near enough to get your hair, they'll be near enough for the rest as well. But yeah, it could help.
As for being prepared for the worse, unless what you mean is that you're already prepared for such situation, I'm not sure you'll have enough time to get all your things and enough food in a place high enough and not easily accessible if a zombie invasion occur. Especially if they are the fast kind, such as Left 4 Dead's.
Well that's unless you live in such place.

Slow "uuurrrrrggghh" zombies have never bothered me. I'd just leg them up.
However, the RE4/Left 4 Dead zombies would scare the hell out of me!

Depends on:
A) Zombie type (Runners / walkers, intelligent / dumb)
B) Where I am at the moment
C) Infection possibilities (Bite, scratch, airborne, etc.)
D) Which weapons I have around me
E) People around me
Lots of factors each come with their own technique. Though, if we're talking classic "... of the Dead" zombies. Dumb walkers who infect you with bites and scratches:
- I'd try to mobilise every survivor I can find into a small militia
- Secure a small village or group of houses
- Barricade the surrounding area
- Organise patrol groups of a minimum of three people
- Organise scavenge parties as soon as we've stocked up with everything of our area
- Organise some sort of council consisting of five people including myself
- Eradicate every zombie which comes too close before they group up and we'd get overwhelmed
And much, much, much more.
Though walkers are easy to survive, I'm expecting that runners will probably kill too many humans to make use of my above plan. Not sure how to deal with that, but I bet I can work a plan on the moment.

It would be an a great choice to create another virus to counter it...
