Game suggestions

So as part of some sort of 30 year crisis / end of a chapter of my whole video game days I'm going to revisit some games and need your help to come up with games that are worth playing.

So, I've been thinking about buying a Nintendo Switch for a while but keep coming back to the fact that there are so many other things in life that is using up my time that I can't really justify the cost and then play it for a month, leave it for some 8 months, play a week and then leave it again. Somewhere I need to own up and admit that I'm less of a video game player these days and more of a general nerd.
Maybe I will experience some sort of renaissance when my kid gets older but there's no telling he'll be interested in these old things I keep laying around anyway, if he even becomes interested in games to begin with.

So maybe this can make me enjoy games as much as before? Or just make me realize that it's a phase that has passed and I might just sell some of these old things away.

Basically what I intend to do is to play a few games on the consoles I happen to own (or can emulate):

• N64
  GameCube
  Wii
  Wii U
  PS1
  PS2
  PS3
  PS4
  Gameboys (all of them from the classic grey w purple buttons to the 3DS)
  PSP (never got a Vita)
  And PC

So do you have any suggestions on games that would be worth playing? Classics? Any game you personally enjoyed? Underrated games?

I recommend Ori and the Blind Forest and its sequel Ori and the Will of the Wisps. They're available on the Switch, PC, or Xbox One, and they're fantastic metroidvanias with incredible soundtracks and some of the most impressive visuals I've ever seen. It really looks like a painting come to life. I absolutely love these games, I bought the soundtrack on vinyl, and I bought Will of the Wisps a second time after it released on Switch because I want to play it on there, too.

I've also recently been spending time with Panzer Paladin (Switch and PC), a retro-influenced action-platformer that feels like a bunch of NES classics merged into one. Heavy Megaman influence, a little bit of Castlevania, a hint of Blaster Master, and just a touch of Ducktales. It's rad, but it has some weird difficulty spikes. Nothing too intense, but most of the stages feel like a walk in the park (even on hard), but then you run into that one part in the level where you die three times in a row, or fight a boss that has seemingly undodgeable attacks, and it starts to feel a bit too authentic to the games it's imitating. It's still a great time and never ruins the fun, but be aware.

If you just want to play Doom, I recommend Shrine and Shrine II, on Steam. They're free, which is a plus, but also it's basically a Doom mod. Like, it runs on GZDoom. It doesn't re-invent the wheel, and a big chunk of the weapons and enemies are reskins, but it's fun to see a cosmic horror take on Doom, kind of like if Quake was made in 1993. I like the fact that (at least on the higher difficulties) the enemies are tuned to be able to kill you very quickly, but overall aren't all that hard to fight if you're careful. I also really like that the levels are rather small and straightforward. No exploring labyrinthine stages looking for keys or grunting against every wall hunting for secrets. It's kind of like a Super Mario Bros. 3 approach where every stage can be completed in a few minutes. It really feels great as a more bite-sized package.

I do too much of my gaming on mobile or PC now. Alas until I solve this issue with my memory I can't try an emulator so I couldn't even say what you could do there. I know there's some great ones out there to try though.

Sounds fun but I found Shovel Knight to be difficult enough.
