I guess Star Ocean: The Second Story. There's no main antagonist until disc 2, but the plot is still pretty awesome.

Characters
===
Phantasy Star 4. All of them are pretty unique.
Okay, except for Chaz, he has blond hair and a sword.

Music
===
Star Ocean: The Second Story by far.

Battle system
===
It's a tie between Chrono Cross and Star Ocean: The Second Story.
Aw what the hell. I pick SO.

Graphics
===
I don't know, I'm not a graphics whore. A lot of good games have kinda the same graphics...

Djanki - I was a sucker for most of the Blade Masters. Balmung, Racheal, and Marlo were all people that I liked to use. Sanjuro was easily the best Heavyblade, Piros was the best Heavyaxe. I liked the Wavemasters a lot, Elm and the other old pregnant lady. Wasn't a fan of any of the twin blades or any of the polearms, their personality screamed dull.

So far it looks like FFT, Chrono Trigger, and Suikoden II are gunning for the average overall favorite game here. All good choices. I personally havn't played Suikoden II, but I've seen people play it.

Star Ocean 2 was truly epic, and it deserves all the attention and credit people are giving...But I dunno, I couldn't fit it in my list anywhere...

My opinions are decidedly shorter than some of the others posted.

My favorite RPG music track is Mt. Tamaranch from Link's Awakening.  It has gusto.  Also, it really sticks out from the rest of the Zelda music out there.

I think that nobody really mentioned Xenosaga because the quality of those games are all over the place. The art style changes dramatically, the system goes through two total overhauls...even so, Xenosaga does have a story that's head-and-shoulders above others. The thing is, Namco committed the cardinal sin of putting story before gameplay.

Take that comment with a grain of salt--I haven't played Xenosaga for myself.

I'd play Xenosaga again even if there was NO ACTUAL GAMEPLAY.

For me, RPGs are like the 8th art. Or 9th, I dunno which position is still free. It is, in it's essence, a story book. But it mixes all the ohter arts to bring the experience to the maximum, allowing you to participate as much as possible. But in it's core, it's nothing but a book.

Story > gameplay. Or else you get the shitty RPGs we see nowadays.

It's actually a clever mix of the two. A story-only game isn't fun. A gameplay-only game defies what RPGs are all about. Mix the two just right, and you have the perfect game.

story = gameplay > story

For me, I believe that story and gameplay are equal in importance, but I have trudged through a terrible story for good game play but I'd never play a **** game for a good story. I'll just go read a book.
