Well, it's used by bull**** uneducated artists. Newton based it on the colors he could distinguish in a light spectrum, forcing it to 7 because 7 is a highly honored number.
Newton isn't the most accurate guy, either. Did you know he practiced alchemy?

I actually think the opposite of purple is orange and not yellow in that case. I always get orange when I'm not using a violet shade.

Ctrl+i in Paint gives me green for purple. And if Paint's Ctrl+i says it's green, then it is green. Don't mess with Paint's Ctrl+i.
