Hey,
Didnt really know where to post this so thought i should whack it in here... im currently working on a side project but im wanting to have some higher detailed tiles, along the lines of the sort of tiles you would have seen in Suikoden II or other PSX games and onwards. Ive looked all over the net to see if i can find any, and i found a couple of smallish tilesets but was wondering if anyone knew of anywhere that would be worth looking.
My project isnt that far along, im still making the framework and finishing off the toolkit before i can make anything worthwhile, but the in game tile system and navigation is working and i wanted to test it with some higher res tiles, so if anyone can point me in the direction of any i would be very happy

theyre a bit hard to find Im afraid. Ive been trying to get a portfolio together with some different sizes of tiles and base sprites. Was hoping to get enough to show and maybe whore off my talents for money. Im going out on a limb and thinking you dont want to pay me money to make you custom tiles. However, If you were to take some existing tiles at 16, or 32, pixel resize them to 200% size, and mess around in paint for a while, Im sure you would be able to bust out something workable.

Hey,
Im rubbish at pixel art and stuff, im pretty good with code though, so i stick to that. I may be wanting to pay for tilesets further down the line but until i get the framework and toolkit in place for it all its just going to be wasted money... im kinda ripping an old web based game i wrote YEARS ago apart and remaking it with *hopefully* more freedom and an actual world to walk around...
Problem is when you have a large viewing area (lets say 800x600 as minimum) you can see the tile repeating a hell of alot more than you used to on those older games, as i said originally though im not out to kit out my entire game at the moment just want some fairly decent looking tiles to test with so i can see what sort of quality i can get... I have made it all quite flexible so i can have tiles on as many layers as i want and through some rather rubbish *baking* processes get it running quite fast... well... its silverlight so its still no where near as fast as i would have wanted... but its fast enough.

Yeah thought as much
Catch 22 for me, as i dont want to pay until i have finished the framework (well at least a little further along) and can see how it looks, but i cant see how well it will look at perform without some decent tiles to test it.
My last project failed because i couldnt find any decent artists who were willing to work with me on the project, coders you can find by the handful for gaming projects but artists... whoa thats crazy!
Oh well

Hey,
Havent got a specific template in mind, i wrote the tileset system to cope with any sizes on any layers, so you could have a bottom layer of 64x64 and a layer on top of that of 32x32 or even 128x128 if you were feeling a bit saucy. You can have as many layers as you want and you specify where the players layer would be and it just merges it all together at runtime in these *baked* tiles. Oh it also supports animation on a per tile basis, so you can have grass or water animations etc.
Anyway back to the question, originally i was thinking of 64x64 but after not finding anything at that size i thought maybe 48x48 would be the next progression (i believe suikoden tiles are this size), but there are next to nothing available at that size... definatly nothing that looks good... back about a decade ago i remember coming across some suikoden tiles, but havent been able to find them now
as they would be fine for my current purposes.
Im still not sure if i should do it isometric like alot of the quite vibrant 2d mmo games tend to do these days or stick with top down, i can support both but currently i know i will need a world map, which im thinking will be top down. The inner areas are still up in the air but i would imagine top down.
To think.... once im done sorting out the tiles then ive got to worry about doing the whole character animation set
(although im planning to keep that fairly simple with 1 animation view that is mirrored)

Why not just rip the Suikoden tiles yourself? All you need is a screenshot and an image program.

That would take me forever, not that im trying to be lazy, but im trying to write this framework which takes up a good chunk of time when im not working, so i would rather just grab some premades that have been done and optimized by a pro than making a 2nd rate rip that takes twice as long as a pro to do... leaving me to get on with what im good at

Not sure about PSX emulators, but most emulators for older consoles allow you to disable layers, making it easier to disable things like sprites/models/other parts of the backgrounds and effects like fog, which may help your cause in ripping. Ripping isn't that difficult to become good at, also, you could request rips in the appropriate boards here as well, someone may do all of it for you!

Cheers for the links, that should be more than enough to get me up and running, i can just do a large indoor scene or something... I still have to write the parallax layer support and possibly an underlying layer support so you could have a static water animation under all layers and parallax fog or whatever as an overlay...
