What changed?
Everything
Edit: Okay not everything but a whole lot, I can't believe they still only charge like 9€ for this. Here's a changelog:
http://forums.terraria.org/index.php?threads/1-3-changelog.20617/
The only thing that bothers me is how they move away from the retro style for more detailed icons and such, but that's probably because I've played for so long.
But I kinda love how they added achievements that hints to what players can/should do in the game. I recently talked to a buddy who got this during a sale some years back and have spent like 80 hours on it and he had never defeated the Eye of chtulu, it came and murdered him one or twice, but he thought it was because he dug to hell. So the achievements acts a bit like a guide. Like there's a an achievement for Using explosives or your trusty hammer, smash a Shadow Orb or Crimson Heart in the evil parts of your world". And then there's one for defeating the wall of flesh with the description "Defeat the Wall of Flesh, the master and core of the world who arises after a great, burning sacrifice." Right after one that gives you an achievement for "Spelunk deep enough to reach the molten underworld." So that's probably really useful for the new players.

Okay I've been exploring the new update some and so far it's a great update. There are some new armour sets and weapons (surprise) and some new biomes that can spawn in your world. i never thought i'd see a salamander spitting acid at my face before.

There's less new stuff than in 1.1 or 1.2 in this update, but it feels like everything new and a lot of the old is more polished and better integrated. And I do love the achievement system. I've been playing a new character and world since release and its fun to take another cruise through it all. Just about to enter hardmode. Wonder how the mechanical bosses are these days.

I love how the underground sometimes have a minecart track when generated. Makes the exploring a bit more fun. Also, marble and granite can make some sick looking furniture.
Btw, I like that they added expert mode, the enemies and bosses are a bit harder to kill now so you don't go around one-shotting everything. But so far only the item from the wall of flesh has been useful (the demon heart that increases accessory slots). But I'm pretty sure that you get more drops in expert as well. I don't know how else I ended up with 340 crimtane ore after defeating BoC. Luckily Crimtane makes a neat building brick with its red glow.

Medusa turns you to stone periodically when you look at her and she looks at you. In addition to not being able to move or defend yourself, you fall immediately, which can kill if you fall too far.
I can handle them now that I have stronger weapons but wow was that rough as a nooblet.

Yeah I experienced that a bit later. Luckily my minions took care of everything when I was petrified. Gotta love how the bewitching table makes minions useful for everyone.
Okay all normal bosses and the 3 mechanical ones are defeated on expert. I don't get why the reward for the normal bosses are so much better than the mecha version. I mean, who really need a faster minecart?
Also, portable flying piggy bank is awesome, as well as the that thing that keeps track on monster kills, monsters present and scouts for rare monsters such as mimics, or that new hallowed mimic or why not the tortured souls?

I'm doing magic and summoning. So I throw out two Nimbus rods to rain in the area they are most likely to stand. If you don't have the nimbus rod, the crimson rod is pretty much the same thing but weaker.
Next I throw out my turret, the spider queen summon, and then I have my 2 minion summons. They will keep damage up, also, if you have the spectre set with the healing helm then the damage from those cloud will provide you with a constant healing.
Speaking of healing, you might want to throw up a campfire and mix a heart crystal with a chain to make a heart lantern. They will both boost your hp regen, not by much but it helps a bit. If you prefer to move around a bit then even a small pond of honey will give you a hp regen for 20 seconds. They best way to maintain your hp is heart statues though. Hook them up with a 3 sec timer and they will be releasing hearts that heals you 20 each.
Next up I usually consume an ironskin potion, some fried fish(don't really remember the name of that one) and either a hp reg potion or max hp + potion (depends on if I have any at hand, I usually stick with the ironskin and fish). Ironskin is kinda easy to make and the only thing you need for fish is... fish and a cooking pot. Being well fed (the fish) also increases the hp regen bonus from other sources.
For equipment I usually go for survival until I have strong enough items to defeat them easily. So I use the cross amulet that increases the invulnerability frame after taking damage, can also be combined to make stars fall when it happens (because it will happen), I usually use the cobalt/obsidian shield as well. But mostly because I like extra defense and not being knockbacked. And last I usually use the alchemist stone to reduce potion cooldown, it's not by a lot but enough to make a difference. The black belt is also good for survival, especially when matched with the cross necklace, it gives a chance to "evade" damage and gives you the ability to dash from side to side. I tend to unequip my boots for these fights and keep the wings so that's good for getting sideways. The rest are damage based accessories.
If possible I usually hook up two teleporters and some traps. Teleporters aren't as useful for the destroyer since it's so huge though.
But for the
twins
I put two teleporters on opposite sides and create a wall of dart traps inbetween facing each other. Usually 4-5 blocks in front of the teleporter. This allows laser eye to circle above and shoot me while bitey eye will shoot the fire balls into the wall of dart traps. The dart traps fire from two days and don't do a lot of damage, but since I will be focusing on the lasery eye it still do some damage to the other one in the meantime. This could also be done without the teleporters, but it might be difficult to get them to position themselves where you want them. So the basic idea is that you stand on one platform and shoot them, once they enter "chomp chomp" mode instead of shooting: trigger the telporter and go to the other side. Rinse and repeat. This is especially effective when bitey eye starts to do the fire breath.
For the
destroyer
I usually keep the same arena as the previous one. Only that I don't use the teleporters much. The dart traps will all hit something, since the thing is huge. If I feel confident about my survivability I tend to encase myself in a box of bricks to keep the probes out. And then dump a bucket of honey below me. I also move the heart statues from standing next to the teleporters to stand inside my little box providing me with constant healing. If I don't feel as confident I tend to fly around a lot, usually sideways to find a spot where it isn't. But most of the time I just try to keep my distance from the dart traps and collect hearts the probes drop.
Skeletron prime
, I personally find this one the hardest since he consists of so many parts. I use the same strategy as the twins though. If I have teleporters then I will teleport from side to side to avoid the parts actually damaging me. Otherwise I use a wall as well to keep the cannon arm from damaging me. The dart traps will hurt the parts in-between, just note that the head tend to hover higher than the other parts and will usually not take a lot of damage from the dart traps. The good thing though is that while he's doing the spinning attack - he takes a bit more damage than usual. Either blast it away and then move once he gets close or jump the teleport to make it spin around in your dart trap gauntlet. Another strategy that usually works against skeletron is the highway. Instead of staying in one place you equip your fastest boots (maybe a swiftness potion) and level out a highway. You run in one direction attacking him as you go and then once you reach the end you hookshot the ground to fly through him (avoiding the knockback) and start running the other direction. He is generally not fast enough to do a lot of damage against you if you run from him unlike the other two mechanicals.
Otherwise the easiest thing to do is to get help from other people. The bosses weren't made to be done by yourself if I remember it correctly so getting some damage assistance might help and mitigate some damage.
Wow that was a lot of tips...
