Only a few of us are actually established spriters. Seems a bit unbalanced really.

Hm, I've only seen a few sprite. This is why I said that. Well, I know I sprite (though I am a bit lazy...).

I MIGHT do something if I get comfortable.

I may join as well, it will depend on many factors...
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Ben on June 21, 2009, 08:55:18 PM
if you introduce a standardized template to the sprite off, and post like, a standard pallette and a theme...
youve got yourself a balanced contest. You Frequent PJ lucas...you know this.

Id say use one of the fiftybajillion or so templates that users around here have made. Like prpls bchar, JPs bchar, the standard rtp template,
or like, I have some stuff...
Title: Re: Sprite off

Title: Re: Sprite off

We have at least 20 spriters here. It could work.
Me
X
DF
Jet
Apex
Corey
Prpl
Red Fox
Red Giant
ZeroKirbyX
Gemini
Valerie
Fisherson
Dragoon
Grandy
So all the parts of my avatars that don't involve the base sprite are what? Stolen from the internet?

Guys, I'm a plagiarist.

You think I'm a decent spriter? Hah!

But I guess I can give it a go if there's a prize involved. I wont do it for mere bragging rights.

Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: SaiKar on June 22, 2009, 06:27:17 AM
I recommend someone come up with some basic ground rules if you're going to encourage individualism instead of using templates. For example, size limitations, numbers of frames and directions, color depth. the inclusion or absence of weapons and/or other handheld objects that aren't part of the character itself. That sort of thing.
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Prpl_Mage on June 22, 2009, 09:38:30 AM
I'm in. Lets have someone start this.
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Ben on June 22, 2009, 11:08:30 AM
If i were to throw something out there for groundrules, allthough its not my show, but I AM intoxicated at a stupid hour

Id say 16 colours, including transperancy
And (XP style)
4 frames of animation,
minimum 4 directional poses

or 2k3 style, with three frames and 4 poses

Or there is always bchars.
THing is, single image non animated sprites are easy... animated sprites actually require some skill.

Would templates still be an option, or would people actually have to do this from scratch? Im excited to see what you jews come up with
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Fisherson on June 22, 2009, 05:06:23 PM
...who?

You wouldn't know him, but his name was Musashi (no not Miyamoto Musashi from DW)
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Fisherson on June 22, 2009, 05:12:26 PM
The brave fencer?

Yep that'd be him. I surprised anyone even remembers him. That game was awesome, even with the wacky story.

Also I think we should do what Lucas said. Just limit it to the Rm2k standard battler size. Also I think we should have a maximum of 250 colors and five shades. Would that work out for everyone?
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Archem on June 22, 2009, 06:10:55 PM
Oh God, I remember reading about that in an old Game Informer. If only I had a PlayStation at the time. It looked cool.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that ancient GI is still intact. I must see if it still looks badd-asss*.

* Extra consonants are cool.
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: fruckert on June 22, 2009, 08:00:39 PM
16 should be enough.
...
I'm not a spriter or anything, but 250 is kind of overboard for a charset/battler/whatever the hell you guys are doing.
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Ben on June 22, 2009, 08:20:15 PM
even if 16 werent enough, 32 would be.

There is no need for that many colours in a tiny 2k3 spriteset. Its overboard.

I think the definition of PIXEL ART and its restriction should be defined before people go trigger happy with photoshop effects
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Prpl_Mage on June 22, 2009, 08:26:54 PM
We can have many different sprite off's.
We can start one with templates.
And then start a new one from scratch afterwards. There are no restriction, we can do both - only at different times.

Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Darkfox on June 22, 2009, 09:38:29 PM
16 colors hm? Perhaps... I don't think I use more than that currently. My last one was only around 5 or 6.
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Darkfox on June 22, 2009, 09:51:51 PM
Is that the maximum, or has to be?
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Archem on June 22, 2009, 10:39:35 PM
Maximum. At least 2 colors. With less than that, its just a plan BG :P
I could prove that wrong if I weren't such a lazy bastard.
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Darkfox on June 22, 2009, 10:48:46 PM
What of different shades of gray? Those would not be unique colors.
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Archem on June 22, 2009, 11:02:57 PM
Transparency counts as a color, so 1 color = empty BG
That's not a color! That's an absence of color! Don't lie to me and try to pass it off as truth!
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Uberpwn_w00t on June 23, 2009, 02:57:42 AM
So we're going to be limited to charasets or something? I kinda liked the way we did the last sprite-off, where you were given a theme, there was a few restrictions, and you could just take it from there.
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Fisherson on June 23, 2009, 03:07:55 AM
16 should be enough.
...
I'm not a spriter or anything, but 250 is kind of overboard for a charset/battler/whatever the hell you guys are doing.

Sorry I've been having to reduce everything that goes into the Chain Game to 256 other wise it won't work for it so I just said 250 because it was all I could think of.

And what else could we have

I have to admit I can't think of a better prize. Though maybe we should actually MAKE some awards for this. Like as in make them our selves. Maybe have a thread with the winner displayed in sprite style, like my pic in the Charas User Resource page.

Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Darkfox on June 23, 2009, 03:42:43 AM
You can only have 16 shades of gray if the max color number is 16 and you to want use only grays o_O

I was just joking in Archem's argument.
Title: Re: Sprite off

Title: Re: Sprite off

holy ****. its like nobody here has ever had to work with pixels before.

ANY GIVEN RGB VALUE INCLUDING GREYS COUNTS AS A COLOUR.
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Archem on June 23, 2009, 05:47:30 AM
But not transparent, right?
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: HobomasterXXX on June 23, 2009, 05:58:25 AM
Transparency shouldn't ever count. That's stupid. And by the way, so is keeping it to charset size. It is nigh impossible to make something natrual loooking in it's posing on those restrictive sizes.
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Archem on June 23, 2009, 06:05:44 AM

Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: fruckert on June 23, 2009, 06:38:16 AM
If two pixels have the same RGB value, but a different Alpha value, they can be considered the same color, as they technically are the same color, but you can see through one a tad more.

EDIT: Might want to ask the expert's on this matter though. I'm not too positive.

Can't tell, I thought that was your nickname for...man I forgot his nick...it's xXtremeXx or something similar.
If so, then no, I have not, I was just giving my own two cents on that aspect. I, as you very well know, am no artist, and as such don't really have much knowledge in these matters. I just thought I'd give my opinion on that matter.

Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: SaiKar on June 23, 2009, 06:07:31 PM
A title screen isn't a sprite contest test. It's a photoshop filter test. Plus it's sort of a weird category since a game only needs one title and potentially dozens of everything else.

Could change it to a number of things, like a weapon category, or a handheld object of your choice that fits with your character set, or something along those lines.

Now that that debate is settled are we ready to set the contest date?

Oh and HTML I think gem meant that the noobs from dA already worship your photoshopping skills enough, you dont need us to do it too.

I must've missed the annual convention where the regular usage of the eraser and brush tools became leet skills.
Title: Re: Sprite off

It happened about the same time people started thinking just because what they see is better than what they can do, it means that can't give it critique.

Title: Re: Sprite off

Member A creates a Photoshop work that is excellent. Member B does not give critique because Member A's work is better than Member B could do, so Member B feels like since it's better than they can do, then he has no right to critique.

Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Ben on June 24, 2009, 05:40:03 AM
Straight up pixel art requires that no effects tools are used.
No brushes. No Brush shapes. No Opacity effects.

If its a pixel art sprite off, then it should be stated. And a definition of Pixel art should be given.
If its not straight PA, im out.
I dont use effects, I have enough talent to do things the old fasioned way.
Title: Re: Sprite off

TO set transparancy you need a color, however... it shouldn't be counted because it wont be part of the actual sprite you're gonna see.

Invisible is not on the color wheel. It's on the technical one, but not the visual one.

Gem, probably the person to go off of here as he is actually a pixel artist, says a Transparent pixel is considered part of the palette.
I'm pretty sure he discounts the background though, because that'd just be stupid.

Nope. BG and transparency WILL NOT be counted.

Tch, anyone can tell anyone else to shut up, but if you need someone to father you then is alright.

Is completely bogus if this is actually gonna undergo those settings.

Val, in pretty much all pixel art, the transperant color in the background counts.
The Computer registers it as a value...and displays is as transperant because its told to.
It only makes sense....its motherfuggin logic.

Seriously, ****

I dont know what goes on in your heads

"HAY, THERE YEAH OKAY, UH....TRANSPERANCIEZ SHOULD COUNT AS COLER, BUT NOT WHEN ITS THE BACKGROUND"

Im not even going into depth with this. If these buttheads cant google search and look up the definition of pixel art then this contest is going nowhere

Dude you think I don't understand values and what not? You think I don't know pixel art?

This isn't about technological values or how a computer register those values. Who gives a ****! The computer is NOT, listen NOT, gonna grade, or JUDGE for that matter, the pixel art.

You need to find out what art really means if you think that your God forsaken tech values are high above priority when it comes down to visual and emotional stimulation.

Kij, take the stick out of your butt. Lucas is trying to host a contest, and youre going out of your way to nitpick away at a set of rules and guidelines that is actually pretty much already the standard. Hes asking you to make a 16 bit palletted piece of pixel art.
16 bits means transperancy is included. Dont s hit on my titties and tell me its a sundae. Just shut up. If youre in, then youre in, and youll follow the rules Otherwise, just can your vagi-er...mouth, and wait for the ext one, the one where the guidelines have changed. God knows i spend much more time waiting for contests with rules that suit me then i do participating in these things.

Or maybe you could just hold a shitty anime photoshoppi ng contest. Seems more up your alley anyhow....skill wise

Hehe, you're funnily ignorant.

I am not trying to impose rules. And I know am not certainly the only one saying that knows their stuff. We are just too picky when is not even our contest. only difference here, is that Lucas, has no idea of what he's doing when it comes to rules and the reasons for them.

We have a right until someone gives final word to fight for these standards. I am simply doing that, and so are you. We are just at each end of the table.

No no, you obviously didn't read what I posted a few posts back.  I know transparency is a color. I know it takes up a color slot. I know the value it represents. I am not at ALL denying that concept and that truth. I am saying you SHOULDN'T count it for this contest in this site.

And btw pixeljoint is the worst community there is in the subject.

On second thought, youre right. Those hacks at PJ are a bunch of talentless hacks. WOrst community ever. No talent there.

SO then maybe check out pixelation

Kij, i think the bottom line is that you could very well be so bad a pixels that you are raising a fuss as a means to justify your inevitable failure.

Also, in regards to the post a photo thread.....Ive seen your picture, and youre a chubby man, not a girl. Good try though. Just saying. Not much merrit to give to fake transvestites.

You could always pretend it's 15 colours with transparency not counting..!

lol it's sad to see that you are in desperation to win this argument to include an irrelevant matter and attack on a personal level. At least I know you're desperate and running out of options.

Pixel talent is in a lot of places. Including pixel joint. However that does not make it MY worshipping place for outstanding inspiration. Most of the people there are repraised egos on a stick that lick each other feet (to not say worst) for getting good criteria.

As for my pictures... don't know which ones you may be reffering, but I am stil hotter than you.

Well actually I would prefer for this to be like an actual RPGMaker sprite off and have a 256 limit including trans. This an rpgm site afterall. Not a spriting website which follow unnecessary color rules.

Gem, there's no real point in complaining about Kijuki being anal. He DOES that. I actually thought I banned him, but I guess that was a long time ago.  :-*

Also,
I agree with Cerebus.

There are fewer and fewer times that this isn't true for me.
Title: Re: Sprite off
Post by: Ben on June 27, 2009, 02:20:06 AM
You did ban that account.
I wasnt complaining about him being anal. I was pressing his estrogen button is all. Its a large button, about the size and shape  of a mans fist emerging from the moistened sleeve of a wizards cloak, located on his chest, and its pink, spongy and resembles a man riding a canoe from the top.

I was flicking his e-bean. Because he throws it out there so eagerly, it almost asks for it.
