We need one. Talk about it.
-
i could have sworn i saw a thread like this before...
-
Only a few of us are actually established spriters. Seems a bit unbalanced really.
-
Meh... I am all for it.
-
YEAH, LET'S DO IT!
-
I'd go for it.
-
Hm, I've only seen a few sprite. This is why I said that. Well, I know I sprite (though I am a bit lazy...).
I MIGHT do something if I get comfortable.
-
In words of another purple haired video game character "Let's do it!"
-
In words of another purple haired video game character "Let's do it!"
with or without a good woman at our side?
-
In words of another purple haired video game character "Let's do it!"
...who?
-
I might join to keep myself entertained.
-
In words of another purple haired video game character "Let's do it!"
Is it Brave Fencer Musashi? I remember him saying that at those memory box things
-
I may join as well, it will depend on many factors...
-
if you introduce a standardized template to the sprite off, and post like, a standard pallette and a theme...
youve got yourself a balanced contest. You Frequent PJ lucas...you know this.
Id say use one of the fiftybajillion or so templates that users around here have made. Like prpls bchar, JPs bchar, the standard rtp template,
or like, I have some stuff...
-
Let's do it. NOW.
-
Now? O_o
-
I can't start now. Guess I'm out. O_o
-
Um, I can start now.
-
We have at least 20 spriters here. It could work.
Me
X
DF
Jet
Apex
Corey
Prpl
Red Fox
Red Giant
ZeroKirbyX
Gemini
Valerie
Fisherson
Dragoon
Grandy
So all the parts of my avatars that don't involve the base sprite are what? Stolen from the internet?
Guys, I'm a plagiarist.
-
You think I'm a decent spriter? Hah!
But I guess I can give it a go if there's a prize involved. I wont do it for mere bragging rights.
-
I do my own character charasets now.
If that counts I mean.
-
I'm in. Hopefully I'll read the rules carefully this time. xD
...Damn hamburger monster
-
Im not in.
But ill gladly watch.
I have no time for this right now
-
I recommend someone come up with some basic ground rules if you're going to encourage individualism instead of using templates. For example, size limitations, numbers of frames and directions, color depth. the inclusion or absence of weapons and/or other handheld objects that aren't part of the character itself. That sort of thing.
-
I'm in. Lets have someone start this.
-
If i were to throw something out there for groundrules, allthough its not my show, but I AM intoxicated at a stupid hour
Id say 16 colours, including transperancy
And (XP style)
4 frames of animation,
minimum 4 directional poses
or 2k3 style, with three frames and 4 poses
Or there is always bchars.
THing is, single image non animated sprites are easy... animated sprites actually require some skill.
Would templates still be an option, or would people actually have to do this from scratch? Im excited to see what you jews come up with
-
...who?
You wouldn't know him, but his name was Musashi (no not Miyamoto Musashi from DW)
-
The brave fencer?
Yep that'd be him. I surprised anyone even remembers him. That game was awesome, even with the wacky story.
Also I think we should do what Lucas said. Just limit it to the Rm2k standard battler size. Also I think we should have a maximum of 250 colors and five shades. Would that work out for everyone?
-
Oh God, I remember reading about that in an old Game Informer. If only I had a PlayStation at the time. It looked cool.
Actually, I'm pretty sure that ancient GI is still intact. I must see if it still looks badd-asss*.
* Extra consonants are cool.
-
16 should be enough.
...
I'm not a spriter or anything, but 250 is kind of overboard for a charset/battler/whatever the hell you guys are doing.
-
even if 16 werent enough, 32 would be.
There is no need for that many colours in a tiny 2k3 spriteset. Its overboard.
I think the definition of PIXEL ART and its restriction should be defined before people go trigger happy with photoshop effects
-
We can have many different sprite off's.
We can start one with templates.
And then start a new one from scratch afterwards. There are no restriction, we can do both - only at different times.
-
What're the prizes?
-
Those're terrible prizes. I'm out.
-
No, and I don't know. You all are the ones working on the contest.
-
16 colors hm? Perhaps... I don't think I use more than that currently. My last one was only around 5 or 6.
-
Is that the maximum, or has to be?
-
Maximum. At least 2 colors. With less than that, its just a plan BG :P
I could prove that wrong if I weren't such a lazy bastard.
-
What of different shades of gray? Those would not be unique colors.
-
Transparency counts as a color, so 1 color = empty BG
That's not a color! That's an absence of color! Don't lie to me and try to pass it off as truth!
-
So we're going to be limited to charasets or something? I kinda liked the way we did the last sprite-off, where you were given a theme, there was a few restrictions, and you could just take it from there.
-
16 should be enough.
...
I'm not a spriter or anything, but 250 is kind of overboard for a charset/battler/whatever the hell you guys are doing.
Sorry I've been having to reduce everything that goes into the Chain Game to 256 other wise it won't work for it so I just said 250 because it was all I could think of.
And what else could we have
I have to admit I can't think of a better prize. Though maybe we should actually MAKE some awards for this. Like as in make them our selves. Maybe have a thread with the winner displayed in sprite style, like my pic in the Charas User Resource page.
-
You can only have 16 shades of gray if the max color number is 16 and you to want use only grays o_O
I was just joking in Archem's argument.
-
Seriously, you should really do all of this consideration prior to posting about the contest.
-
Indeed. Can't agree more.
-
Hey I just suggesting stuff. This is Lucas's thing. I just want to try and participate this time. I say go to MSN and discus this then come back and post the new rules. Then we make a thread and get this started.
-
holy ****. its like nobody here has ever had to work with pixels before.
ANY GIVEN RGB VALUE INCLUDING GREYS COUNTS AS A COLOUR.
-
But not transparent, right?
-
Transparency shouldn't ever count. That's stupid. And by the way, so is keeping it to charset size. It is nigh impossible to make something natrual loooking in it's posing on those restrictive sizes.
-
Transparency counts as a color, so 1 color = empty BG
Transparency shouldn't ever count. That's stupid.
Lucas, honey, I think I've won this argument. *applies lipstick*
Oh, like you've never seen Rocky Horror.
-
If two pixels have the same RGB value, but a different Alpha value, they can be considered the same color, as they technically are the same color, but you can see through one a tad more.
EDIT: Might want to ask the expert's on this matter though. I'm not too positive.
-
Someone get back to me when there's some official rules and stuff.
-
Oh, like you've never seen Rocky Horror.
I have, if that counts for anything. *does time warp*
-
Lucas, just throw down some standard rules, I know you know your stuff.
I might join simply out of nerd rage.
Xtreempein, you have not checked out many actual pixel art sites have you? Transperancy is almost ALWAYS included in the colour count of a pallet
-
Xtreempein, you have not checked out many actual pixel art sites have you? Transperancy is almost ALWAYS included in the colour count of a pallet
Are you talking about me?
Can't tell, I thought that was your nickname for...man I forgot his nick...it's xXtremeXx or something similar.
If so, then no, I have not, I was just giving my own two cents on that aspect. I, as you very well know, am no artist, and as such don't really have much knowledge in these matters. I just thought I'd give my opinion on that matter.
-
no i was talking to xtreempein.
-
OOh, a sprite off of charsets? nvm me.
-
no i was talking to xtreempein.
All right, point taken
-
Damn you and your tempting, tempting contest!
-
A title screen isn't a sprite contest test. It's a photoshop filter test. Plus it's sort of a weird category since a game only needs one title and potentially dozens of everything else.
Could change it to a number of things, like a weapon category, or a handheld object of your choice that fits with your character set, or something along those lines.
-
Them photoshop people need some luv too.
And i like the monster thing. I am good with monsters.
-
no, the photoshop people dont need any love. You have enough hugbox from your "OH NEAT HOW DID YOU DO THAT" friends on Deviant art.
-
Title screen? :\
-
Title screen? :\
Title screen doesn't mean ****. The only title screen I thought was ever epic was the one to the Legend of Zelda.
-
no, the photoshop people dont need any love. You have enough hugbox from your "OH NEAT HOW DID YOU DO THAT" friends on Deviant art.
Lot pf photoshop users despise dA
-
Title screen doesn't mean ****. The only title screen I thought was ever epic was the one to the Legend of Zelda.
I meant, why a title screen in a SPRITE contest. If we want to have a title screen then it should be a screen contest.
-
I must agree photo shop is just kind of cheap. Anyone can use it and thus it's just not fair to no photo shop users.
Now that that debate is settled are we ready to set the contest date?
-
A date other than "now" if you please. XD
-
Oh and HTML I think gem meant that the noobs from dA already worship your photoshopping skills enough, you dont need us to do it too.
I must've missed the annual convention where the regular usage of the eraser and brush tools became leet skills.
-
It happened about the same time people started thinking just because what they see is better than what they can do, it means that can't give it critique.
Never stopped me.
-
It's like I understand what you said, but then I don't.
-
Member A creates a Photoshop work that is excellent. Member B does not give critique because Member A's work is better than Member B could do, so Member B feels like since it's better than they can do, then he has no right to critique.
-
Ah, thanks for that. I am an idiot most of the times so I don't really get contexts like that.
But, yeah, for what you speak, there is truth.
-
Straight up pixel art requires that no effects tools are used.
No brushes. No Brush shapes. No Opacity effects.
If its a pixel art sprite off, then it should be stated. And a definition of Pixel art should be given.
If its not straight PA, im out.
I dont use effects, I have enough talent to do things the old fasioned way.
-
That's how I've been doing it. Purely paint, no fancy tools.
-
Agreeing with both DF and Gem here.
-
I never tried to use the fancy tools in Photoshop when just doing anything pixel. Well, no, I did a little bit with the glow in my Super Saiyan Week avatar, but that's about it.
-
My take is, Photoshop is useful for larger images like facesets, title screens, battle backgrounds, and monsters and should be tolerated for those.
-
EVERY PIXEL MUST BE PLANNED
-
Rather like children.
Except nobody follows that rule.
-
Sounds good. But nobody replied to this:
So we're going to be limited to charasets or something? I kinda liked the way we did the last sprite-off, where you were given a theme, there was a few restrictions, and you could just take it from there.
-
My installation of windows XP for whatever reason does not include Paint, hahahahhaha.
That's fine, I have an alternative... *Grabs DS.* Template me.
-
you know, apex, there are all sorts of free alternatives to paint.
-
You don't need to be a mod to start a contest. Just get their permission and post it already.
Too much talk too little action lads.
-
Why cant you join if you start it? As long as youre not judging it, youre fine kid.
Im no mod, but im pretty sure you have the okay. Just start your thread, and get it going
-
Before this topic closes, or gains another 3 pages without anybody replying to this:
Sounds good. But nobody replied to this:

-
Yeah, I read them. I'll definitely still participate, but it just doesn't feel as open as the other sprite-off.
-
Don't have a sprite off with rounds. It only makes it complicated.
Make many different contest where everyone can join.
Then just decide the total winner afterwards or something.
-
I say voting, like last time.
-
But then it may be a popularity contest.
-
Well, there was that factor in the last one as well. I think it went pretty well.
-
Yep.
-
We could like, post the sprites, and not tell who's sprites they are! =D
Jk. But nah, that wont be a big deal. It wasnt like that last time.
.... Archem nearly won this week for doing nothing ...
-
I'm just that awesome, I suppose.
Power like that should not be in my hands!
-
How about a chipset contest for those of us who are just plain masochistic?
-
I'll volounteer to judge, if you need that. I know my stuff, but I don't really care to enter.
-
Yeah, same here. Judge Fudge.
-
Cool, now I know who to bribe.
-
That doesn't mean anything. I don't think transparency should take up a slot as one of your allotted colors either.
-
Hell, I agreed with it.
Then thought Gem yelled at me.
Wait...I'm not participating.
Just ignore me.
-
Ugh. Damn guys :/
Gem, help me! D:
GEM CAN'T HELP YOU NOW!
*throws TV*
-
Ugh. Damn guys :/
Gem, help me! D:
He already cleared that up I believe
-
"Cleared" that up! Transparent! Hilarious!
-
And I actually get THAT.
-
You're a riot and a half.
-
TO set transparancy you need a color, however... it shouldn't be counted because it wont be part of the actual sprite you're gonna see.
Invisible is not on the color wheel. It's on the technical one, but not the visual one.
-
Invisible is not on the color wheel. It's on the technical one, but not the visual one.
But according to our God and Saint, DedlellyDeth, the color wheel is a lie!!1!
Xtreempein, you have not checked out many actual pixel art sites have you? Transperancy is almost ALWAYS included in the colour count of a pallet
Gem, probably the person to go off of here as he is actually a pixel artist, says a Transparent pixel is considered part of the palette.
I'm pretty sure he discounts the background though, because that'd just be stupid.
-
You're a riot and a half.
That extra half is what makes it all worth it.
But according to our God and Saint, DedlellyDeth, the color wheel is a lie!!1!
False idol, bitch.
The Archem is not pleased. Not at all...
-
I worship the Square Dood, not Douchecackus Supreme Dethmobile.
-
And I like cake. Lots and lots of cake. So... any word on how/when this will start? :\
-
Nope. BG and transparency WILL NOT be counted.
-
Tch, anyone can tell anyone else to shut up, but if you need someone to father you then is alright.
Is completely bogus if this is actually gonna undergo those settings.
-
Val, in pretty much all pixel art, the transperant color in the background counts.
The Computer registers it as a value...and displays is as transperant because its told to.
It only makes sense....its motherfuggin logic.
Seriously, ****
I dont know what goes on in your heads
"HAY, THERE YEAH OKAY, UH....TRANSPERANCIEZ SHOULD COUNT AS COLER, BUT NOT WHEN ITS THE BACKGROUND"
Im not even going into depth with this. If these buttheads cant google search and look up the definition of pixel art then this contest is going nowhere
-
Dude you think I don't understand values and what not? You think I don't know pixel art?
This isn't about technological values or how a computer register those values. Who gives a ****! The computer is NOT, listen NOT, gonna grade, or JUDGE for that matter, the pixel art.
You need to find out what art really means if you think that your God forsaken tech values are high above priority when it comes down to visual and emotional stimulation.
-
Kij, take the stick out of your butt. Lucas is trying to host a contest, and youre going out of your way to nitpick away at a set of rules and guidelines that is actually pretty much already the standard. Hes asking you to make a 16 bit palletted piece of pixel art.
16 bits means transperancy is included. Dont s hit on my titties and tell me its a sundae. Just shut up. If youre in, then youre in, and youll follow the rules Otherwise, just can your vagi-er...mouth, and wait for the ext one, the one where the guidelines have changed. God knows i spend much more time waiting for contests with rules that suit me then i do participating in these things.
Or maybe you could just hold a shitty anime photoshoppi ng contest. Seems more up your alley anyhow....skill wise
-
Hehe, you're funnily ignorant.
I am not trying to impose rules. And I know am not certainly the only one saying that knows their stuff. We are just too picky when is not even our contest. only difference here, is that Lucas, has no idea of what he's doing when it comes to rules and the reasons for them.
We have a right until someone gives final word to fight for these standards. I am simply doing that, and so are you. We are just at each end of the table.
-
So yeah.
Host a contest already.
-
so... Less arguing and more contest starting?
-
No no, you obviously didn't read what I posted a few posts back. I know transparency is a color. I know it takes up a color slot. I know the value it represents. I am not at ALL denying that concept and that truth. I am saying you SHOULDN'T count it for this contest in this site.
And btw pixeljoint is the worst community there is in the subject.
-
On second thought, youre right. Those hacks at PJ are a bunch of talentless hacks. WOrst community ever. No talent there.
http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/17060.htm?sec=rating
http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/17123.htm
http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/12082.htm
http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/2153.htm
SO then maybe check out pixelation
Kij, i think the bottom line is that you could very well be so bad a pixels that you are raising a fuss as a means to justify your inevitable failure.
Also, in regards to the post a photo thread.....Ive seen your picture, and youre a chubby man, not a girl. Good try though. Just saying. Not much merrit to give to fake transvestites.
-
So, are we going to have the damn sprite off, or are you all going to continue arguing over silly little things which will hardly have an impact on this contest anyway?
-
You could always pretend it's 15 colours with transparency not counting..!
-

lol it's sad to see that you are in desperation to win this argument to include an irrelevant matter and attack on a personal level. At least I know you're desperate and running out of options.
Pixel talent is in a lot of places. Including pixel joint. However that does not make it MY worshipping place for outstanding inspiration. Most of the people there are repraised egos on a stick that lick each other feet (to not say worst) for getting good criteria.
As for my pictures... don't know which ones you may be reffering, but I am stil hotter than you.
-
You could always pretend it's 15 colours with transparency not counting..!
lol.
Which is eactly what the whole thing meant from the beginning. FML.
-
Well actually I would prefer for this to be like an actual RPGMaker sprite off and have a 256 limit including trans. This an rpgm site afterall. Not a spriting website which follow unnecessary color rules.
-
then start your own contest, and quit fagging this one up.
-
There is no contest running yet dimwit.
-
Nope. Because your imaginary vagina is in the way
-
Thanks. I have the safe assurance that my sex change is impacting the world.
-
this bickering is the reason we can't have nice things.
-
Africa is also dying of hunger
-
Okay, if this forum was on a roadtrip, then that post was just a 90Degree turn off the road
-
If it was a roadtrip this whole site would be a hell of a rest stop :S
-
That is also true :3
-
I agree with Cerebus.
-
Gem, there's no real point in complaining about Kijuki being anal. He DOES that. I actually thought I banned him, but I guess that was a long time ago. :-*
Also,
I agree with Cerebus.
There are fewer and fewer times that this isn't true for me.
-
You did ban that account.
I wasnt complaining about him being anal. I was pressing his estrogen button is all. Its a large button, about the size and shape of a mans fist emerging from the moistened sleeve of a wizards cloak, located on his chest, and its pink, spongy and resembles a man riding a canoe from the top.
I was flicking his e-bean. Because he throws it out there so eagerly, it almost asks for it.
-
There are fewer and fewer times that this isn't true for me.
Well that' nice to hear/read! :D
-
You basically won me over with the KIROV REPORTING!
-
Yeah...hotter....
-
So... Contest anytime soon?
Less bickering more contesting.
-
I don't like this thread anymore.
Yeah, contest now plox.
-
I am always happy.
