Okay. There are a few tuts that mention characters somewhat. But I believe that a good game has good characters, so I am here today to make a tut on how to balance your charactrs, and how to make them. Not stat wise, but personality and such. Its kind of like a guidline. Okay, here we go!
What is a character?
A character is a person in your game. Now whether it be a main character, Non-Playable Character, or Side character is all up to you. But each serves their own purpose and without one of them, your game will not work. They are the main source to any game, and their would be no story without the characters. They serve as conflict, solution, and all in between.
What is a Main Character?
A main character is the key point to any game. Whether the character be the Protaganist (Hero) or Antagonist (Evil) is decided by you. Usually the Hero is out to stop the Villain. But the MAin characters are special because their backround should be explained throughout the story. That's what makes them a Main character. They are the true focus of the games plot.
What is a Non-Playable Character? (NPC)
Alot of people see these initials, but dont actually know what they mean. NPC is is exactly what is says. It is a non-playable character. It can vary from a Normal Civilian, Thief, Shop Clerk, Pilot, Martial Artist...the list goes on and on. Basiacally they are characters that you cannot control on our own. You can influence themto do things, but they cannot be forced to do anything. These are the backbone to any game, and without them, there is so one to talk to, gather info from, or get any items/weapons from.
What is a side character?
A side character is usually an optional thing. They are there for an extra boost, or to add a bit of reality to the situaution. They are not Main characters, and their backround is only very brief. Just enough to know who they are. They usually join you to do a certain task. Then leave for whatever the appropiate reason is.
This is only part one. Introducing what each character is. If there is something I forgot on any part, let me know and I'll fix it right away. This is my first tut, so please help me with any mistake. ^^ Hope it helps!
Part 2 will be on :Where each character can be used, and how to use themproperly.
Part 3 will be on: Character development.

Did you get the part idea from my mapping tutorials?
However, it's a nice tutorial.

Lol, I didnt get it directly from your map tuts. I just thought it would be better in parts....is it sticky worthy? Or will it be if I add more detail to it or something?

I'd say it'd be a good idea to clarify that supporting characters (the other party members) should count as Main Characters. I feel that those characters are just as important to the story as the main character. I'd say, if anything, to reference FF6. FF6, IMO, is the epitome of character creation. Every playable character in the game (with the possible exception of Umaro and Gogo) served important roles throughout the game. They weren't just there to make more party members. They were there because they made the story work.

Common sens yet handy for the new comers.
I agree with what CoolZidane said about FF6. It doesn't get much better than that.
