FE-style faces

I've noticed some Fire Emblem style custom faces floating around. They all seem to have parts from actual FE characters..... can someone tell me how you make those things? They're purty. *grin*

Well, first you have to get some sheets that contain the faces from the game. I just happen to have the majority of the faces from all three GBA games
here
,
here
,
here
, and
here
.
Pick the parts of faces you want, and erase the parts of the face you don't. Then move or paste the desired parts where you want them, recolouring them as you wish. The important part for them to look good though is that you have to fix things up by hand, adding shading and changing sizes by yourself, otherwise things look literally pasted on.
Once you get better, and have learned the style a bit more, you can do more custom work on things.
Some examples that won me an FE face spriting contest.
As well as my namesake, Daetyrnis.

I remember seeing some templates for them a while back somewhere.

So do I, but in all honesty those won't work that well. Unless you have the skill to work with them, as limited as they are, but if you can do that you might as well make them custom from scratch anyways.
To start off, I suggest splicing.

Ah, great. Sounds like a fun new thing to learn over the summer. I'm all for summer learning of probably useless stuff.
I was prompted to ask, I guess, by realizing suddenly that one of Ember Sky's characters looks suspiciously like Ephidel...... o.O

I've got a few splices I've done too... if you want to see/use em just ask.
I need to get someone to make a Fire Emblem "Saber" profile for me too.

I'll make FE-Saber, that should be fun. Her hair bun will be odd to do though.

Yeah... the bun is where all my attempts have failed. I hope you have a lot better luck than me :p

Well, I couldn't sleep last night, and I did like 7 cutscenes yesterday, so I didn't want to work on Ember Sky. I came up with this; it's nothing fancy, just splice and recolor, and a little edit on the hair so it's not terribly square from the cutoff at the shoulder..... I did a bunch of recolors with the hair too.... I liked this red one and another purple one best.
I do so far enjoy this, so tips are appreciated.

For one, don't cut off parts because of the size of the image, make the canvas larger.
The skin colour is not consistent, and the colours in her face seem really off. Also, her hair should have the pseudo-black outline, not a darker red. Where her hair connects to her neck should also be a bit darker.
Good for your first try though. For colours, I recommend just taking from other FE face sprites, and NEVER use the default paint colours; they're too bright.

I think part of what happened with the colors was my switching about 5 times between Paint, Photoshop, and idraw. I lost a bunch of colors at one point, which I think destroyed the face. *smacks computer with a stick* *ducks as it blows up*
I'll try and remember not to use insanely bright colors like that again.... o.o It's like she's on fire..... of course, I do enjoy fire.... but..... yarrr...
When I come up with something decent-er, maybe I'll put it in the gallery or sommat. My sister, being the spaz she is, has asked me to do Ember Sky FE faces for her (she's a bit on the obsessive side, even more than I am....), so I'll do that for practice. Hopefully, all this mucking around in Photoshop will help me next year in college....
