1. Wrong forum. This should be in the rm2k/3 section.
2. You'll have to explain what kinda CBS/CMS you want b4 anyone can help you.
3. I wouldn't recommend making a CBS if you're working on your first game. CMS is already very hard to make and CBS is even more difficult!

Well I didn't say you shouldn't make a CMS but I said I couldn't recommend a CBS (Costum battle system).
Basicly you'll just have to teleport the hero to another map that looks like a menu and change his sprite to a cursor. But much of it depends on which kinda skill learning system you'll be using.

Try making a RTP game first, then a non RTP, then when youve gained more experience you can try out a CMS.

Yeah you'll need to memorize the position and recall to it when leaving the menu. A CMS common event would look somewhat like this:
<>Memorize position, Var ####: Map, var####: X-pos, var ####: Y-pos.
<>Branch if hero facing up then var ####: Facing set 1
<>Branch if hero facing right then var ####: Facing set 2
<>Branch if hero facing down then var ####: Facing set 3
<>Branch if hero facing left then var ####: Facing set 4
<>Change hero sprite: Cursor
<>Teleport: Map ####: CMS Map
And when leaving the menu:
<>Tint screen: R0,G0,B0, 0.2 sec (wait)
<>Branch if var ####: Facing=1 then move hero: face up.
<>Branch if var ####: Facing=2 then move hero: face right.
<>Branch if var ####: Facing=3 then move hero: face down.
<>Branch if var ####: Facing=4 then move hero: face left.
<>Change hero sprite: Hero
<>Recall to memorized position: Var ####: Map, var####: X-pos, var ####: Y-pos.
<>Tint screen: R100,G100,B100, 0.2 sec(wait)
Of course there're some more stuff you'll have to keep in mind when making a CMS (Like if the hero has poison he shouldn't lose life when moving the cursor on the menu)

Maxine I want to help you. This is all I will say and I will not respond to arguements about it: RPG Maker XP Is way better than any of the others. You should use it instead. It is more powerful and a LOT easier. You'll have to learn a new programming language. Let me help by providing a link to a site with a useful help forum:

Alright, heres my advice, you don't need a CMS unless your adding a bunch of features that the DMS (defult menu system) can't do. I can make CMS's pretty easy, but its still pointless to make a system that works the same way as the defult system is made.
Anyway, when making games, you should learn the basics first before moving on to more advanced stuff like custom systems. It would be like learning Triganomatry before learning basic algebra.
To make your game interesting, you don't need custom systems
, replace the rtp graphics with graphics your find on the web, like on charas. Make a good story, make a good intro, and just keep the gameplay fun.

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN
