What am I getting myself into?

Okay, first let me make it perfectly clear I'm a COMPLETE n00b as far as this making an RPG thing goes. I've come to the experts here not so much for a tutorial but for advice. I've got a couple idea's I'd like to use in my first game, and it would be helpful if I could someone's opinion on about how complicated they would be for me to actually try. I don't really need tutorials for these just yet, but i won't shun them if they're offered. Also, all of these idea's are to be implimented in RPGMaker XP.
The First Idea (and easily the most important): I'm not really going to toy with the combat system too much, but one thing I would love would be the ability to give everyone a wholly unique ability in combat. The best example I can think of would be Final Fantasy 6 for those of you familiar with it. Right now i just care about the hurdle of making this POSSIBLE, programming the abilities themselves i'll tackle later.
Example: A character that has a "power up" command that becomes available when a battle reaches a certain length of time, or after taking a certain amount of damage. Or perhaps a command to make use of certain items in the inventory other characters have no access to.
The Second Idea: Since I plan on leaving the basic combat layout intact, I wanted to make it so the portraits of the characters change in reaction to things like being hit, using skills (or the above mentioned custom abilities), or being affected by status ailments.
Example: A character has it's usual portrait sitting there. Suddenly an enemy attacks! For the duration of the attack animation on his portrait, the portrait changes to depict him reeling from the blow. Now the enemy's attack has affected him with the status ailment Sleep! His portrait changes from normal once again, to depict him curled up in a ball snoozing away. Maybe with a pillow and PJ's for comical effect. Once the status ailment is gone, it switches back
So, what do you all think? Is this going to be way too much for someone just starting out? Or should I go for the gusto? Figuring that much out now would help an amazing amount for how I plan everything out from this point. Many thanks for all the help!

Ok, well first off, all of that is possible using rmxp, so thats a start. I think it would be way too complicated for someone new to the system though. In order to do changes like that, you would have to be able to use the ruby scripting system, which is a lot harder to learn than the normal rpg maker scripting system.
The thing about rmxp though is that you can 'download' and install scripts that can take care of this stuff. Though I don't know if theres a battle system mod that'll change the poses of the sprites, I know that there are a bunch of battle systems that will change the battle system into a side view fully animated system. There may be one for the specialized commands, but I haven't seen one.

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN

Yeah, most of that I pretty much figured. Learning Ruby is actually what I want to focus on doing while putting this game together, so I can put together much more awesome games later. So i'm fully willing to LEARN, that's not really a problem. It's more a question of "how much is this going to fry my brainmeats?".
The idea with the portraits is precicely because I want to have some sense of the characters reacting to the fight, without having to make custom battle sprites for every single attack and such. I'm already going to have enough graphic work on my hands with a huge cast (14 playable and god knows how many npc's) and having to do alot of original tilesets. Making a simple little portrait for each character would actually be alot easier for me, as I've alot more experience with that kind of thing.

Well if you learn how to script in ruby, I doubt you'll fry your brain too much in making those modifications. They don't sound like they'd be too complex to do.
