sound device problems

I am having some problems with the sound on my compy, and its getting very annoying. Right now I have no sound device, or so my compy tells me. I have SoundMAX installed on my computer, but when i go to the multimedia section in my controll pannel (windows 98), it doesn't show up as being there.
Anyway, does anyone know how to fix this problem?
If I buy a new sound card or whatever they're called, will it fix it?

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN

try reinstalling your sound card again, and if that doesn't work, try getting a new one

Well i tried reinstalling it a bit ago, but when i restart my compy (required) it says I need a disk for one of the files. Well the stupid computer technition who fixed this compy 3 years ago downgraded it to a windows 98, but didn't include any of the windows 98 disks, so I can't really reinstall much of anything.
