Megami Tensei translates as "Goddess Rebirth" or "Goddess Metempsychosis", Shin means "New". This is a reference to the original Megami Tensei games for the NES "Megami Tensei" and "Megami Tensei II" which were developed by Namco. Atlus started the Shin Megemi Tensei series and it branched out from there. Yup. The game series was started by the Pac-Man guys. XD

But yeah. Kuzunoha Raidou is an example of steampunk.

Heh, I'm a heavy MegaTen fan, I think you know that already. It's what really started me to started to use much less savage monsters and more humanlike beings. It has been a big influence in how I work stories and stuff today. So I LOVE the series. Plus it has massive replay value. XD

Im having a hard time thinking of good steam-powered weapons other than a potatoe gun...

Steampunk is all about off-the-wall gadgets. I'd suggest turning mages into "gadgeteers" who either make their own inventions that blow fire or distort the fabric of time or something of the sort or they simply build automatons to do their dirty work for 'em.

That's exactly what I was thinking about.
Summoners would be gadgeteers with bots.
Healers would be medics, but with shots and sprays. Kinda like Resident evil. Mix some herbs, magic results.
Or as in 8-bit theatre: Glue. "It's white. And it works like magic".
Any destructive caster would use machines I guess. Bombs and concoctions, something firing lightning. A primitive flamethrower. Ice would be a harder problem though (okay, Lucas figured it out. Liquid nitrogen).
