Ah, so it does tell. I didn't even notice the star. And even if it did, I wouldn't think it was a sing of shininess.
But considering it seems pretty, very, extremely, unbelievably rare, when I obtain it (I guess I should get it one day) but doesn't do anything beside shining, I guess I shouldn't bother trying to reset the game if I don't obtain a shiny starter Pokémon.

You can breed shinies too, so it'd probably be less frusterating to try to breed one. Heck, if you use a pokemon from a different language version of the game (japanese ditto works real well for this) your odds drop to 1/4 the normal odds. Which are still godawful (don't ask me about my shiny koffing attempts...) but it would still cut countless hours off the attempt.
