Question about PS3 data transfer
«

So I noticed that I can apparently connect 2 ps3s with an ethernet cable and transfer the data on them. From one to the other.
Have anyone done this? I have a bunch of Playstation network games(little big planet, classic Final fantasies) on it and stuff like that(DLC crap) and I wonder how they will transfer. And will this still work if I create a new PSN ID on the new console`?
This seems like a good idea since I need to get a new one when I move and I don't like to leave all the stuff behind.

I have done it.
You carry over most things, but I didn't make a completely new account when I did it. Some game data are account locked, and some game files are the same way. I would suggest logging into your old account on the newer ps3 after (so that you have it 'on file') then creating your new account if you want to start fresh. By having the old account on your new ps3, you should avoid ownership issues for games you downloaded via psn.

I made a fortune in toothpicks, but I lost it all in a fire.

^ This.
Anything purchased digitally will only respond to the account that purchased it (or, rather, will only respond if that account is on file). This is partly an anti-piracy measure (no passing around a single PSN account and having dozens of people own a game that was only paid for once) and partly a convenience element for if you move your account to another device. The same thing applies to saved games, since they're connected to the account that played the game. This is a pretty universal setup, so most anything with a system like PSN (Xbox Live, Steam, Origin, etc.) will have similar ways of working.

Alright, it was as expected. So I need to keep the old account then. Maybe I can just change everything about it to make it work and convince everyone else that I need FFIX more than them.
But everything is transfered? It's not like the Wii that won't transfer stuff that had any online mode.

Yeah, everything is transferred.
If you want to "start fresh" but keep your old stuff, you can contact sony and have them change your user name. Doing this will make you lose all your trophies and whatnot, but your game saves and psn downloads will still recognize you as the owner, so it would be similar to starting anew. Not reversible.

Interesting idea.
I'll have to think some more on this, and actually get a new PS3. I've had the 80gb model (let's call it the European model) these 5 years so I'm thinking about moving on up to a 120 or a 160gb. 320 or 500gb seems like too much. I have already been forced to delete game data everytime I want to play new games so it's not like I have a lot of data to transfer that needs space anymore.

Fun fact, you can only get your hands on the 12gb slim model or the 500gb version of the PS3 these days if you don't want it second hand. So I'll have more space on that thing that I'll ever need. This is the time I wish that Sony's new consoles were backwards compatible so I could just buy a ps4 instead. Oh well.
Also, been thinking about this transfer business. You mentioned how things were account locked so that people can't just share it around. But if I can just log in with my account on a different machine, what's stopping me from sharing that account with even more people? It's kinda like my 2 buddies who share a steam account. Only that they can't both play at the same time. But that would barely be an issue with the ps3 since you don't have to be online.

You can only have your profile associated with five systems. Once you get to five you cannot link your profile to another system.
So, nothing is stopping you from game sharing (I do it myself) but you can't do it without limits. Also, apparently some downloads have a limit to the number of times they can be redownloaded (typically 2). The online thing applies for ps3 as well: only one person can be online on said account at once. You don't have to be logged on to the game owner's account to play their content though, you just have to have their account enabled on the system.

Okay so the transfer worked great, all the DLC and stuff got transfered, the trophy collection as well.
However, even though I transferred my Little big planet 1&2 profiles stored in the game data thing, both games started a new upon playing.
Also, damn the ps3 looks ugly when you're not playing it on HD.
